Manual all the way. I've owned both manual and automatic mustangs and wouldn't go back to automatic. With a car this powerful, the truth is that an automatic is probably quicker in the 1/4 mile for 90% of drivers. But there's still something inexplicably fun about rowing through the gears, even in traffic, and I do live in a high traffic area.

As for the wife thing -- my wife doesn't know how to drive stick, and I see that as a benefit... It's a great excuse for why she can't drive my car! Haha.

My last two Mustangs were autos and I have driven many sticks. I will have to test both in the new S550. As a tall guy I have struggled to get comfortable with pedals, seat and steering wheel and might find working around a third pedal (clutch) to be too much. That said, I have constant bemoaned the fact that I couldn't control all 6 gears in my autos. I would constantly be looking to downshift to keep the engine in a more favorable RPM range. So I guess I want both! Good luck with that. :)

By that logic somebody who spends 100k on a Porsche 911 with PDK can't really enjoy it because it's not a stick. Pretty sure that wouldn't be the case.

My car is an auto and I have plenty of fun. I'm not knocking manuals here, but is possible to enjoy either version.
If you're a true enthusiast, no, it wouldn't be fun. You're just a passenger in an auto. There are plenty of people that absolutely HATE the big three exotic companies (Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche) for eliminating traditional manual transmissions from their cars. I actually know one person in particular that wanted one of the new 911's that ONLY come with PDK, but opted for a ZR1 instead because he wanted a stick. It's an unfortunate trend in high end cars (except the Corvette and Viper).

You are entitled to your opinion but calling someone who prefers automatics not a true enthusiast is a load of crap.

To each their own.

I apologize if I've offended anybody as that wasn't my intention. I just can't understand how simply steering the car can be as much fun as truly controlling the car through a stick. At the end of the day, nothing I or anyone else says can sway your opinion, and it shouldn't.

I appreciate your understanding and I understand what you mean but your posts come off as if you prefer an auto over a stick you are less of an owner/enthusiast/driver or whatever. Sure it isn't as involved or in touch as it is with a manual, but different strokes for different folks.

Some people prefer different levels of involvement while driving but it doesn't make them less of an enthusiast, just more or less involved.

I drive automatics for several reasons and I don't feel the need to justify my choice to anyone but myself. Buy what you want, let others do the same. Judge not lest ye be judged yourself. ;)

No hard feelings my friend. :)

Nice post, i prefer auto's as well and hoping to get a GT/auto but i'm considering an EB/manual too.

I would probably modify it in a slightly different way than i would the GT also, the GT would get some bolt ons and BBR Reaper nitrous kit. There is a 13 GT auto with this setup running 10.87 on the 1/4 while the EB i would focus on handling mods and give it a tune and exhaust for some extra power.

I want the Guard but was hoping it would be unique, seems like a lot of people might be going with it. Also considering Magnetic, Comp Orange, or Oxford white with blue wheels. Not a mustang but this color combo and i would probably only do this or the orange on the EB car, i don't want the bright colors on the GT.
haha my saying is flashy car flashy color so I'm probably going comp orange

Some people simply don't have the ability to understand other people. They can only understand themselves.

What you are saying is the same as saying Blue is my favorite color. I simply cannot understand why red would be anyone's favorite color.

It simply boils down to preference. Some prefer manual, some prefer automatic. It really isn't a matter of logic unless you are racing or trying to go as fast as possible and then, the logical choice would be the fastest one.

Ford needs to sell cars, so first and foremost, they are going to sell to what the majority of people want. Beyond that, they will sell some niche cars and halo cars as long as it is either profitable in and of itself or helps generate sales.

Someone bemoaned the fact the Porsche and Ferrari are only making automatics. I feel the same way about Ford but in the opposite direction. All their higher performance models are manuals. Why not make at least one option for a high performance automatic?

I think they are leaving a lot of sales on the table by not having an automatic. A lot of people go with Chevy or Dodge simply because they can get automatics in their halo cars. More sales would equal more money which would equal better cars. It would be a win for everyone.

A good point. I can't afford a new Camaro ZL1 but I could buy a used automatic ZL1. I can't buy a used automatic GT500, it doesn't exist. Chevy is wising up even more, the new Z06 will be offered with an automatic as well as it wasn't in the past. Ford needs to keep this in mind with the upcoming GT350 and maybe a higher power GT500 later on. Aging boomers with arthritic knees and bad backs can't and don't want to do a lot of shifting and they are the ones with the money to buy these new. (Not all boomers of course) I hope they keep manuals in the mix though. Options are nice to have and a good manual needs to be offered on a performance vehicle for those inclined.

Yes, by all means, keep making the manuals but offer some automatics as well.

Ford is over the top with manuals. I would have already bought a focus ST for my daily driver, but guess what.....no automatic:(

Same with the Fiesta ST.

Ford is the only manufacturer that offers manuals only on their HiPo models. I'm fine with that.
