Please forgive a Yank for dropping in on your forum thread.

I'm curious if anyone has an estimate of the numbers of Mustangs in Australia. I'm amazed at how active you guys are on the forum and the demand for the Mustang. I never expected a large international market for the car.

Guess that proves that I'm the typical myopic American. If it didn't happen in the 50 states...it never happened.

I think it is nice that North Americans take an interest in little old us down here.

If this article last year is accurate, then we would be approaching 30,000 six generation Mustangs in Australia: https://www.whichcar.com.au/car-news/ford-mustang-to-leave-australia

Sales in the first year or two were huge due to pent-up demand. Mustangs had never been imported straight from the factory in right-hand-drive.

Sales last month were 441 (more than double that of any other competitor sports car model), which was better than the same month in 2019 and 2020. The Mach 1 may have created a bit of interest in the Mustang brand as a whole.

The sales numbers don’t compare with the USA, but our population is under 26 million.

Australians have been very tribal in the past. In the 1970s you had to decide if you were either a Ford person or a GM (Holden) person. The race track rivalry between Ford (blue) and Holden (red) was huge, and still is today to a lesser extent, far greater than rivalry between NASCAR fans.

We had Ford Falcons competing against Holden Commodores for much of the time. Next year Camaros will join the Mustangs in our Supercar racing.

The popularity of the Mustang in high tech Germany has surprised me, but the Mustang is a hard car to resist!

Within a month of it's initial release the Mustang was the most popular sports car in Australia.

...........and has been ever since!

I remember in the early months/years, people liked to comment on how demand would fall off a cliff after the initial hype died down. Generally those who made that sort of comment were Holden supporters, and where is that brand now?

It's the last performance bastion we Ford lovers in Australia have since the demise of our beloved Falcon GTs so long live the Mustang , a car i have loved since boyhood and now we can own them. You should also be aware the opposition Camaro ( we are either blue or red here no in between ) has taken to Australians hearts like the Mustang, so hat's off to the boffin at Ford that decided they would make a RHD version, we salute you.

Sorry but I must disagree. I would say the Camaro has been a sales flop with barely any sold here.

Sorry my mistake i was interrupted when writing i meant to put NOT TAKEN TO AUSTRLIANS HEARTS when discussing the Camaro . We see very few of them and there is probably a couple of reasons for that , they're expensive and ugly. Thanks Bullutt for pointing that out!

they're expensive
This is the reason.

They had to be converted locally to RHD by HSV - $$$$$. It's no longer happening.

We were very lucky to get a factory RHD Mustang - didn't think I'd ever see it.

Yes Drewbo i realise it was a money spinner for Walkinshaw but they were not good value for money by comparison and the demise of GMH well and truly nailed that coffin shut. You never know they may reappear one day but i doubt it as i don't think they're going to last to long in the USA either.

the word is that the Camaro will be discontinued after 2023.

When you see the extra lengths Walkinshaw had to go to to get Holden/GM approval, it was little wonder the price tag ballooned, lots of hardware and labour involved. Three cars subjected to crash testing, so that cost alone would have added to the price of every car converted.

Alas the price tag was too much for the average Commodore/HSV buyer to swallow, which did not surprise me, although I would have thought more cars would have been sold to well heeled enthusiasts. Camaro sightings rival those of Elvis!

I looked a few weeks ago and there were still a few unsold 'new' /very low mileage Camaros on sales websites. I don't think all Holden enthusiasts are necessarily going to embrace/forgive GM and GMSV. All very unfortunate.

Indeed, we are lucky to have the S550 Mustang built in RHD. Here's hoping the S650 will be too. With Ford seemingly approving the use of Mustang in our Supercars series well into the 2020s, signs would seem to be quite positive on that front.
