The deep warm sound you were hearing was likely because of a lack of high frequency energy.
With respect to the AR3s yes, probably. But I had the Vega paired with a set of MB Quarts that made me distrustful of titanium tweeters even to this day. I have seen good examples since but those things were anything but lacking in high frequency energy.

JBL is not the same company it once was, but they at least managed to maintain reasonable quality sound with most of their offerings throughout the company changes.
Most JBL and Infinity products (if not all) are exactly the same just with different decorations and colors. At least in automotive land, not sure about the home stuff if they still do that.
