Your Navy friend likely has far more brains than the idiots at the dealership or whoever tried fixing it previously.

2nd most dealership techs are parts chuckers and cant do diagnostics to save their life.

For what they get paid, especially on warranty work, I doubt you'd do any more than necessary, either.

Necessary? Whatever is necessary to fix the problem completely so it doesnt return IS whats necessary.

Not fix the damn recall item and send you on your way!

As I said multiple times. FIND a competent dealership not someone whos going to hail marry throw parts at it and hope the problem goes away.

Good techs that can read a schematic and do diagnostics with anything more than a scanner are a dying breed because everyone just wants to throw parts at the problem.

On the otherhand "hail marry" parts chucker can replace components until they are blue in the face and it wont change a damn thing if its a wiring problem for example.

Until you stop expecting someone to say X,Y or Z is the problem without doing any diagnostics or troublesgooting you are merely taking a guess and hoping it works!!

Your thought take it to the dealer and if the guy working on it can't figure it out , must be an idiot . Tell me again to move along . Hope your shit breaks in my neck of the woods . You might be sitting a time .

I had a similar problem happen today for the first time. '19 GT Premium, 6-spd, 27K miles. I was backing out of a friend's driveway, slightly uphill, and the camera went out (showed a weird icon with a red X I think). I took it in/out of reverse several times to no avail, it didn't even change the screen on my dash. I backed out, drove down the street, and shut the car off, opened the door, and then closed the door and restarted. Still the same problem. I started driving home, and I noticed that the rev-match stopped working as well.

I pulled over in a safe spot, and went through the menu to find the rev-match. It was selected, so I turned it off and back on again, and then everything was working again.
