I've been out of the mustang hotrodding scene for 12 years now. I had a '93 Cobra, and brought it to be dyno tuned after I added some modifications. After reading this message board and a few others, it looks like y'all are buying a tuning device and then taking it with you to the shop for dyno tuning. Am I missing something here? When I did this with my 5.0, I brought the car to the shop and they dyno tuned it and burned a chip while I was there. No tuning device needed.

Can you give me recommendations of the best tuner near Houston? I see people talk about the ngauge and the SCT, but I don't know pros and cons of either.

Sorry for all the questions, but the new cars seem to be way more sophisticated than the 5.0 motors I used to mess with.

Thanks,
Kyle

new tuners and devices upload tune to your ECU directly, and you can switch tunes and revert to stock easily, think of it like a mini PC and your changing OS and apps as you wish.

When you purchase a hand held tuner it will come with tune files from the manufacturer that you can load into the car. If you buy the device from a tuner their tunes will be on it. You load the tune and data log the car with the hand held and email it to the tuner and they will adjust the tune to optimise the power and email the new file back to you. Load it on the hand held then down load to the car. The outfits that sell the email tuning service will support you with revisions as you make modifications.

Typically if you are bringing the car to a tuner there is no need to purchase a hand held.

Most purchase the device anyway if they need to be able to revert to stock, or use multiple tunes.

Just make sure the hand held is comparable with the local tuners software.

Do I need to know how to use the tuner or is just a plug and play? I was really
Hoping to leave the actual tuning to the folks who do this regularly.

You just plug the device into the OBD port and follow the prompts on the screen.
