The ONLY thing that kills drone is what has been stated a "J" pipe or formally called Hermotz resonator...a 1/4 frequency cancelation. Its cheaper than ripping system out and does NOT change tone or power, IMHO it increases tone in a positive way. I needed to install on my Headed raptor, and it is amazing how it works...I have a post somewhere on this forum with the link to the Raptor forum with Pics and calculation to figure size of pipe needed. A few $100, and drone will be gone 100%...

Awesome thanks!
Varekai,
Like you I bought and had installed mufflers on my V6 that were reported by other V6er's here to have no drone. MIne is the only convertible though. I have substantial drone from 1400 to 1900 rpm's. I need to stop banging my head against the research wall trying to figure out why 'my car' is different and go forward to try fixing it.

Have you tried the helmholtz resonator or dynamat? What hav eyou done and what are your results. We seem to be in the same boat (just different engines ;)).

I think my difference is my gearing. The other users that did the setup I had had a higher gearing, and since the drone is at lower rpm's that puts them up higher so less drone. Also the other member went with an X pipe whereas I have an H pipe, and I read later that the H pipe's tend to drone more than a X pipe would. I plan on doing the Helmholtz within the next month. For now I have just had the stock resonator on. I don't think dynamat would help my case, the drone is so bad with the H pipe it was actually causing rattling and high vibration inside the cabin at the low RPM's.

I've got some Solo Performance J Pipes collecting dust in my garage. They are for a Challenger, but I'm sure you could cut and weld the actual J pipes, they have slides on them to adjust for drone too. If you're ever coming through SC they are yours for a 12 pack!

Yeah man, just let me know. I'm a little west of Columbia and should be around during the week, but am leaving for a little getaway to Asheville that Thursday. But if you swing by, I will leave them out for you.

Helmholtz

I had a Magnaflow on my M3 and it was God-awful at ~2000 - 3000 RPM. I did this mod:
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=754740&highlight=helmholtz

and it made a world of difference. A good exhaust shop can get the length just about right, and you get all the noise when you want it at high RPM, without the drone at cruising.

M3C,
You mentioned "a video to come". Do you have one to post?

Did your 13" Helmholtz tube cancel the full 1,000 rpm drone range? I've heard it only cancels about a 400 rpm range. UNfortunately, my drone is from 1400 to 1900 rpm (1750 peak), so I'd need a 37" Helm. res. tube. :eyebulge:

Any idea which ( inline resonators, x pipe, Helm. res tube) mod did the most to stop drone? Helm. I'm guessing.

Here is my thread from my mod on my Raptor...mine was 29" and it canceled ALL of the drone through the range.
