Check out MAP for a good tune/intercooler combo. Does Etuning and can probably make you a good deal on both items.

There are a few really great tuners here, and they provide outstanding customer service. I do think understanding your goals with the vehicle and what information you want to collect\gather will help you. Looks over the Cobb AccessPort and SCT X4. Those are the two big players in the hardware area.

Aftermarket Intercoolers are more of a preference as well as a installation style. I know some do NOT require the front bumper to be removed whereas others do.

If you are handy wit the tools, and time is not an issue, then you have a broader selection. I am not sure you can go wrong either way.

While price seems to be a huge factor for many of us, myself included, make sure you really consider and evaluate what you are getting for your money in terms of not just hardware, but experience of the tuner, reputation of the company and how they handle support issues. That is where your money should be spent. The hardware is but a piece of the pie you are buying.

I realize this was not a direct answer, but I feel it was a valid response to your inquiry.

Thank you!

I agree SCT is affordable, but the extra cost for the Accessport is definitely worth it. Is is a much more powerful device, and there are many advantages with the Accesport over any other tuner on the market. My favorite, especially when E-tuning is the on the fly map switching. I have customers that have multiple tunes for Pump Gas, Race Gas, and E30. Whenever they switch fuels they don't have to get out their tuner, plug it in, and flash it for a minute or two. Instead they just hold down the cruise control button, and press the + or - cruise control button to switch between stored maps.

As far as the intercooler goes, if you are looking for direct factory fitment and great performance check out our intercooler here or with charge pipes and bov here. If you are looking for a front mount kit, which requires removal of your grill shutters and slight trimming I would go with the Levels kit which I also sell (send me a private message if you are interested). Having tuned a lot of mustangs with different intercoolers Levels performs very close to ours, and the owner is a good guy. The only downside is it is not factory location as mentioned above.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Thank you,
Adam Brunson

buy a cobb ap3 from maperformance and get your custom tunes and don't look back. best $500 you'll spend on the car.

Go with Adam at MAP. He'll take care of you no doubt. Great tunes and great service. COBB AP is the best tuner out there for us.

@evin23 - Sorry for the book, hope it helps!
I've been on the forums now trying to answer the same question. I'm on Mustang #6 since my first back in '79 which was a 67 fastback. I still have my 2006 GT and my familiarity is all with the V8s. Since the EB is my daily driver and I commute 50 miles each way for work, the EB just made sense for the MPG while retaining the fun factor!

Regarding the hardware, with the V8s, it was clearly between SCT (which was my favorite) and the Diablo. Now I'm adjusting to the turbo 4 world that has an established following with a lot of existing expertise, I'm trying to be open in my consideration. I've been trying to review every tune option I've seen, both hardware and software. I consider that completely separate from the intercooler decision with the exception of the cost benefit if you buy both from the same company.

So far, I'm most impressed with Adam's @ MAP tune. Cooincidentally, I like the Cobb Access Port the best for hardware. I care about what the curve looks like. I have no plans (initially) to build the motor. Like you, I'm focused on the tune and intercooler only, no plans for the other bolt-ons except the suspension which is complete with many Steeda goodies and I'm loving that! For me, I look at the tuners dyno to see a few things, how quickly and how much the TQ comes in. I don't want instant TQ like with nitrous, that's a good way to brake things but I don't want it laggy either. Watching the reports, I think I'm most comfortable keep the TQ under 400 and I'd like to see it hold on for as long as possible. For the HP, same, I'd like to see that build up and hold as long as possible since these cars DIE on the top end which kills some of the fun for me.

With the intercooler, since I don't plan to shoot for more than 500hp, I narrowed it down to either MAP's or Mishimoto's. I like that they are both going in the stock intercooler's location. That way if I do some other mod in the future, I don't have to worry as much if the IC is in the way. Between the 2 I like the diverter in Mishimoto's cast end-caps to distribute the air but I like that MAP didn't paint the intercooler. The IT geek in me believes that bare aluminum will be the best to dissipate the heat. So leaning towards MAP here if the combined discount makes it worth-while.

Just visited my local COBB facility here in Plano Texas..... I too like the flexibility of the COBB tuner for my EB. No matter what the performance tune, the stock intercooler is a bit overwhelmed if you push the engine much (the engine mgt will adjust the timing to cool the engine down automatically); therefore, an upgraded intercooler makes sense in order to maintain the higher HP/TQ. I was told they will have their own intercooler, downpipe and catback mods available next month. I also like the new Mishimoto EB mods and the MAP mods. Haven't chosen yet. Many of us are in this boat.

Yes, sounds like an intercooler would be a wise modification considering your environment and tuning intentions. Depending upon your power goals, our intercooler would very likely be a nice choice. We've conducted a ton of testing, ending up with the results noted below.

  • 35°F (19.45°C) reduction in AIT
  • 58% increase in core size
  • 25% increase in internal core volume & 165% increase in external fin surface area
  • Cast end tanks and in-tank diverter provide optimal flow through intercooler
  • Stock location prevents airflow blockage to radiator and AC condenser
  • Installs in under 2 hours without having to remove front bumper cover
  • Retains stock active grille shutters, maintaining ideal aerodynamics when cooling demands are lower
  • Bar-and-plate construction
  • 100% aluminum, TIG-welded
For full information regarding our R&D process, check out the thread below.

Additionally, we are running a discounted pre-sale at the moment (expires 6/15) for this particular intercooler. The price is $475 and is quite a nice deal!

Let me know if I can answer any additional questions about our intercooler. Good luck with your Mustang and modifications!

Thanks
-John
