Remember all those old cars are 'body on frame' unlike today's cars that are unibody. With those you could make major changes while keeping mechanicals the same. If you look closely the wheelbase and ride hight are identical. Admittedly the S197 and S550 have the same wheelbase and engines and transmissions (v6 & v8) while having totally different chassis
