Is there really any difference horsepower wise between just a muffler and resonator delete vs a whole aftermarket cat-back? I would much rather spend 200$ at a exhaust shop then up to 1000$ if there is no difference in performance.

Doubt it, personally, but some muffler will smooth out "natural engine sound" which, even on a V8, and especially this one, isn't particularly wonderful, IMO. But... to each their own. Probably could get away with an X or H pipe and some Magnaflows to make a "shop done" catback for like $600. Putting a Magna on my truck, no other changes, cost $120 WITH installation.

An X or H pipe wouldn't make sense on our platform. Those are for V6s or V8s because you have 2 headers coming down and then you can have them converge mid way through your exhaust system into a X or H configuration. For a 4 cylinder with one down pipe coming down that comes out dual in the rear would call for a Y pipe.

The stock resonator basically does this. One pipe going in and two coming out. This is where you could place a straight through Y pipe instead.

For my custom exhaust, I deleted the stock resonator and the stock muffler. I then placed a single magnaflow in the place where the resonator went. It was single in and dual out, straight through muffler. So effectively a Y muffler. After that point it was straight through back. Had a custom exhaust shop do it for $250.

Car definitely feels stronger with this set up. It's basically straight cat back. It's quiet when your not on it and get pretty loud at full throttle and high rpm. Idle is as quiet as stock.

Haha I guess if your really wanted to you could. Other than fitment issues, you would have one of your pipes leading up to the engine bay with nothing to connect to. Never go full retard.
