Manders, you're not listening. :frusty: Watch my lips. There are apps available that let you use wifi to make calls from a mobile phone. I have wifi at the house.;)
So use Wifi at home to make calls, and when you're not at home, use 3/4g or a normal phone call lol as if you've got signal to make a wireless call through mobile network, you could do the same with the phone.

As someone previously mentioned you can get cell line boosters for your house, but I've had numerous and they were always shocking.

VOIP (Which is what you're asking about) apps there's loads:
Facebook has one built into it's messenger
Whatsapp
Google hangouts
Skype
Viber
...etc.

That's probably in order of use for me, Facebook is good as you just need another user with it, however a lot of 'older' people don't have FB (People they talk to don't etc)
Whatsapp goes number to number so that's it's benefit.

Rest are account to account like facebook but "less" users on each of them.

All of those apps will do VOIP (or as you call it, Wifi calling) without needing to be through a select 'app' or network to network or network locked variations etc.

my S8 has 'smart switch' if I leave my house and I'm using the internet for something, it knows to swap to 4g if the signal drops.

IMO there's no reason to use VOIP outside of your home unless your signal is pants but you have wifi (Ie on a train/plane).

You dont need an app anymore from android 7 upwards, its already in the feature set.

Youd need to search the exact method for your phone as the enable box can move around depending on the android skin thats on it.

It does work, I use it every day on 2 phones :)

Yes, I'm one of those older people.

I would also like to retain the use of my mobile number, which I don't believe is possible with those apps. If I were to use the 3 intouch app can I receive as well as make calls via wifi as if I was using the phone normally.

Just indulge me.

Hi Myweepony

See my reply you can enable wifi calling without the apps.

It just switches to using that when ur in range of wifi automatically, keeps your same number all the time

Whatsapp keeps phone number, Facebook can be done over phone number, however also requires a facebook account.. Skype can be linked to a phone number but requires an account.

I think you want VOIP to Voice calling (as in you can be on wifi, whilst they're on standard signal phones) right? Then most android phones already have that built in.
Broomboy believe S6/7/8 calls it SIP or internet calling. Not sure for other phones, but I know they like to hide it.
Usually on android it's in phone settings under 'call' but sometimes they hide it in hidden menu's and such.

This could be very helpful.

As said I'm on 7.1.2 but can't find the button to enable it in settings. It might be that the button is only visible if you have a sim that is capable of it. Who's your provider and what sort of contract do you have?

What type of phone is it, on some of them you have to enable "system apps" to find it?

What phone you got? Android systems pretty irrelevant as different phone companies mess with android as it's open source, so samsungs touch wiz variant is different to HTCs, ONE+'s etc.

Well, we're making some progress now boys.

I've just got a Wileyfox Swift 2x. Sim free, unlocked. So I'm not about to change it.

The android systems not irrelevant, most phone providers just put a skin on it but the basic functionalities still there.

On my S6 I go settings>apps

then in the top right press the ... button and "show system apps"

go down to phone>more settings>wi-fi calling

The same steps work on my wifes S8, im on Vodafone and shes on EE

Furthermore, on my S8 I just hit the 3 vertical dot son the phone, go to settings scroll down to Wifi calling, and it works.

Wileyfox Swift 2x I've never seen, but if anything it'll be in this general area:

Settings -> -> Apps -> Phone -> VOIP/WIFI/ calling enable it with the slider.

I'd need to see the phone to be able to work it out as it sounds like a random brand, but, it'll be on there.

If your android has a search feature within it, either on the home screen or on the settings menue like my S8 does you can just search Wi-Fi calling on it.

I moved from Vodafone ('ideal' combination of poor signal, slow speed when there was one and appalling customer service) to Three 18 months ago, unlocked iPhone 6, SIM-only rolling monthly contract at ÂŁ11 a month for 2GB, loadsa TXTs and 200 mins; an added bonus for using Three is their Feel at Home service which effectively allows you to roam overseas with your data, TXT and minutes allowances in 60 countries and I've made extensive use of this on holidays.

I initially used Three's WiFi calling app which wasn't that great but iOS 10 has WiFi calling built-in as does the latest version of Android I believe and on iOS it works fine. Vodafone's SureSignal 3G femtocell never worked for me.

Both https://www.cellmapper.net/map and https://opensignal.com/ can help you locate your nearest mast and Network Operator, OpenSignal has both an Android and iOS app.

I bought one of Three's PayGo SIMs, loaded it with a whopping five Quid and wandered around my village seeing if it worked everywhere before committing to a Contract, may be worth considering this approach?

I have no commercial affiliation with Three...

I've done some more googling and it appears you have to have bought the phone from the provider to use the embedded wifi calling. That's probably why I can't find the button to switch it on. This leaves me with the 3 intouch app but apparently that doesn't work on dual sim phones. Guess what? I have bought a dual sim phone. So I'm looking pretty much fooked, unless I get myself bookfaced or whatever.

Or whatsapp, as previously mentioned.... If you want to test anything happy to PM my number/FB i've got every app aforementioned so can go through 'em with you :).

The phone does seem a little, errr... different to say the least, not much online for it, so i'm not much help, usually with adroid, and most OS's shits hidden, annoyingly lol!

with dual sim, only one sim will pull internet, the other wont.
