You can bring post 1972 cars to Japan. You just need to do a request letter. You get the exemption and get an E plate.
Odd, when I went to base legal about it they said if I wanted to bring a newer car over I would have to do it through Japanese customs and I would have to pay an import tax. I wasn't saying you CAN'T bring a car over...the Travel Management Office won't ship one for you free-of-charge due to the embargo.

And I am in the market for a 350, I just hope MAS releases the allocation before I PCS in August!

If I am able to get a GT350 through MAS when the allotments are selected by the lottery It will be delivered for me back in the US. If I go back to Japan I will take it with me. I have taken my current 2005 Saleen with me to Japan twice and it was shipped free of charge and exempted from taxes both time with my orders and the waiver letter. I would be able to do the same with the Shelby GT350 If I can just get one.

Can you provide the process for that waiver? TMO here on Kadena is very adamant about denying auto transport at government expense.

Contact CNFJ at Yokosuka for info but it is a Navy instruction. It may not apply to the Airforce but covers Navy and Marines in Japan.
