I was worried about fumes when charging the battery when I have the car in the car bag.

Wut? Never heard of that before. Can someone confirm if it is safe to leave the car cover over the car while its being charged with a battery tender?

Float charging the battery would probably generate very little fumes at any one time.
Unless you were using a battery boost function on the charger. As with any charger,
don't bring an open flame, lit cigarette, etc. adjacent to the battery you are charging.

Over the course of winter, I move one Schumacher charger (same function as a 'real' Battery Tender) around between my 'toy' cars, bikes, ATV, and mower battery. At the beginning of the month I plug it into something and move it to the next thing once the preceding gets a green light, and start over the next month.

My method must work, one of my bikes is a 2006 and still carries the original battery. Pretty sure the battery in my old Cougar is at least 10 years old.

For me, the actual Battery Tender brand units never lasted as well as others. I bought the current Schumacher unit at Wal-Mart for little over $20 and it's been the best of any yet.

I've always just taken the battery out out and store it downstairs till spring--I give it a charge before installation. I sell car batteries and believe me they can sit for a long time before becoming discharged--really the car is just sitting for 4-5 months--I don't worry about flat spot tires or anything like that.

not an issue. my rx8 sat in a garage with a tender and car cover for two years without being moved.

all is still well.
