I think you made the right choice to go with linears.
My take is that with any halfway sane rate, the ride simply gets 'firm'. Harshness comes from street-intended shocks that aren't valved very well (and in my experience, last decade's Tokico Illuminas are the poster-boy for having bad damping curves).
