Volvo has 2 gills in some headlights, and Peugot got the "tribar" gills down below... I'm not so sure the Mustang will stand out that much from the front in the dark (which is 90% of my driving time :D)

kind of a dis on the Fox Body, they completely discount the cheese grater as tri bar? They were kind of tri bar, in a Fox Body kind of way:

BTW, love em or hate em (and I think many hate them based on how many swap outs there are) the cheese graters are so iconic to me. I love them. They only other tail lamp from the Fox era that I like better and only on the 93 cobra itself are the SVO tails.

Love the gills. My favorite part of the front of the car.

I'm guessing they felt there was more than enough heritage cues on the S197 to stand on its own. I think it was a good decision to save it for the S550.

I found this and it looks to be the OEM LED tails.. I'd love to see a smoked pair of these.

I did a search on 'three bars' to see if I could find anything that might give a clue as to why Ford put three bars on the front and back of the original Mustang.

I was thrilled with one item I found.

A famous sire of Quarter Horses, Three Bars was...a member of the American Quarter Horse Association's American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame

Three Bars was foaled in 1940 and died in 1968, so was an active sire of many famous quarter horses at the time the Mustang was foaled. Hmmm. There is a resemblance.

I wonder!

Has anyone ever heard any stories of why three bars?

This story would be a cool bit of Mustang history if it were anything more than a coincidence.
*VERY* interesting find, thanks for sharing it!
