So, thought I would check to see if there was any play in the wheel bearings today. I jacked each cormer up at a time. Fronts spin as expected, the rears wont, they sort of clack if it try to turn them, does the same both sides. Is this normal? When driving it I dont hear this nosie so assumed it was the diff?

Posi-traction differentials, both wheels spin together

The car has a LIMITED SLIP (GM uses posi-trac) uses clutch discs to allow equal transition of both rear tires when going straight. They are designed to slip (the reason for the term limited slip) when making a turn as the outside axle will turn more than the inside axle. So you are hearing the clutches slipping due to the uncharacteristic way you have the car jacked up. This is all assuming you have the car in neutral.

Another limited slip style is a Torsen LImited Slip found in Mustangs if the option is purchased. I only know that they are designed with gears that help transfer torque IF a difference is seen between one side and the other. I have never had one apart or ran one so I don't know any more than that basic.

Hope that helps.

From Wiki:
The Torsen differential* is a purely mechanical device; it has no electronics, clutches or viscous fluids. ... As soon as one wheel starts to lose traction, the difference in torque causes the gears in the Torsen differential to bind together.

check it out

The Torsen diff the Mustang has, has no clutches.

Thank you so much! Will I have damaged anything by trying to turn the wheels?

You couldn't possibly be physically strong enough to do any damage.

The car has a LIMITED SLIP (GM uses posi-trac)
Thanks for the clarification, I come from the GM world.

I've been to both "dark" sides. I;m even considering trading the 17 for a ZL1 currently just for a change up and a push rod engine.

Funny thing is my older brother, who started us down this car passion 40+ years ago, his 1st car was a 1967 Mustang Fastback. He sold it after a short stint and bought a 1967 Pontiac Firebird 400 and started hot rodding with that. What ensued was 4 brothers owning numerous Firebirds over the years.
If he had started hot rodding on the Mustang I would've likely been a life long Ford guy.
I'd love to get my hands on that 1967 Fastback today as well!

My dream as a kid was to own a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am, but not a Bandit car. I was always a Rockford Files fan. His last one was a 78 Firebird Esprit. So though I wanted the TA trim package, I wanted it brown like his. James Garner in Rockford Files was as cool as Robert Blake in Beretta. Two friends and their dads turned me on to Mustangs. The one friends dad owned over 80 Mustangs in his life and died before who could complete his numbers matching 1967 GT500. Today its just the three of us, and I am the only one with a Mustang. I was the last of us three to own a Mustang and the only one to presently have a Mustang.

Sorry OP - I will digress.
