The stock shifter behind the MT-82 is a remote mount shifter.

Front wheel drive, tranverse mounted engine/tranny = cable.

My 1978 Ford Fiesta had cable controlled shifter. Yes, I had a 78 Fiesta. And yes, I modded it :)

I just answered my own question by looking it up. A cable system like that is essentially a solid linkage with 'some' flexibility. You cannot push with a stand alone cable.

I didn't realize the bell housing and transmission were all one piece.

The V160/161 from the MKVI Supra is also a Getrag and has a remote shifter. Probably saves half a foot of main shaft and tail housing. Not sure if there are any other benefits. I prefer the shifter attached directly to the transmission.



I didn't realize the bell housing and transmission were all one piece.
You should be surprised if you see a trans with a removable bellhousing. Most transmissions have had integrated bell housings for the past couple decades.
