Set up the free Wi-Fi hotspot via Ford Pass - pretty simple and took about 3 minutes on my phone while watching TV. Looked on FAQ but did not see answer - does anybody know if Sync 3 will use the car Wi-Fi hotspot for updates?

Based on the "Connect to a WiFi network to update" nags I was getting last month, it does not appear to.

Wow, did not expect that answer. A car with built in Wi-Fi capability can not connect its own systems to Wi-Fi.

How does it work?

Does the car itself have cellular service, or does it connect to the interwebs through your phone?

Can not? Or stupid hoops to jump thru? I can see Ford making you have to specifically connect to the in-car Wi-Fi.

When I connected mine, it went through AT&T so I know it is a separate thing as we have Sprint.

I get lost trying to follow all the voodoo magic in this car's relationship with the electronic universe. I felt very pleased when, parked across the street from an Auto Club of SoCal office, I was able to log on to their free WiFi network and update something. I'm just not sure what it was.

It’s definitely AT&T as someone stated. I just tried it find the cars Wi-Fi thru Sync 3 and it did not show up. My phone could find it from the car but the car can not seem to find it from the car. Guess I will have to ask Ford.

It has a separate cellular contract after the free trial expires. If you have already have AT&T cellular, you can add it as a $10/mo additional device. If you don't have AT&T cellular, there's a couple of plans starting at $15/mo.

If you select the "Connect Now?" button, the car's separate WiFi network does not show up as one of the options. If I'm in my driveway, my home network does.
