Driveshaft is still spinning at the same RPMs regardless of what gear you're in.Granted ,at lower gear you can transfer more energy to the differential but not by much when your just cruising down the highway.I've had my axle temp hit 200F on a twisty road drive here in north TX with low 80F ambient. The temps look normal to what I've seen. Were you using 6th gear on the highway or staying in 5th (or lower)? I think it could heat the diff more when cruising in a lower gear.
