Absolutely this is what I would do if I broke the cheap plastic cap...NOT. Just use a small dab of E6000 adhesive to the center of the broken cap and center it into place and you are done. I'm not about to roll the dice and break another piece of plastic plus spend the entire day R/R the dash.
only prob with doing something to the MIDDLE of the socket and button.... it covers up the pulsating red LED "heartbeat" light... so have to work around

The magnets are a great idea. I bought the red start button and got a bit scared after seeing you break the clips. But now there is a backup plan.
make sure you use weaker magnets... don't use the too strong (for this application) neodymium
