hello ladies and gentlemen, I’m new here and didn’t just sign up just to ask this question but at the same time the timing is perfect. Ok I was a ford tech for 18 years and had to retire due to health reasons. I’ve done spark plug inserts on a billion 5.4s . Never seen one blow out on a 5.0 coyote. Ok so I’ll try to keep it short . Driving home the other night (was not hot rodding it and hadn’t been) stopped at at a stop sign , took off and heard something pop and then the constant pop pop pop . I knew exactly what it was , I didn’t have far to go to get home so I just eased in . Took the coil cover off , #3 coil was up and the bolt insert was pushed up out of the valve cover . Pulled the coil out and then pulled the plug out with a magnet, threads looked great , looked at the threads in the head with my borescope, they looked good , checked the top of the piston and walls , valves. Everything looked fine. Got a new plug, reinstalled bolt insert for coil back in valve cover. Threaded new plug in just to see , went in super smooth and bottomed out fine, went to snug up and no go , won’t get tight. Ok so after researching , talking to machine shops , other shops( which btw kills me considering this is all I used to do and now I have to ask for help is soo depressing) nobody wants to touch it or if they say they might look at it they want ridiculous money and don’t guarantee it. The only thing I have found is a kit from Time-Sert that’s 350 bucks . My question is has anyone else ran into this on a coyote and what would be wrong with just using a regular cutting tap and a insert that’s just a little short. I know later down the road carbon build up around the bottom of the threads might make it a little bit of a problem taking back out but that would be a long time from now and I probably won’t even be alive when it needs plugs again . This costly kit also comes with a seat cutter and all kinds of other stuff. We never used a seat cutter on the 5.4s that I remember and they used a tapered seat just like the 5.0 plug . Idk just looking for knowledge. Thanks

Sorry to hear that man, I myself also have put multiple helicoil kits into tritons with good results if worse comes to worse could give it a shot if the plug keeps acting up. I get its not the "correct" way to fix it but if you options are that or a new head id say its worth a shot, if you want to ask a pro go on youtube look up a channel called head games and shot him a message hes a really good guy that does amazing work and would probably have a better answer for you then my back yard mechanic way of rigging it with a helicoil lol, best of luck

I’ll look him up !!! Thanks man , and thanks for not being a dick. Seems like every time I post something anywhere on the internet I always get some “telephone tough guy “ or some goofball acting all bad and lying about everything. Good to know good people are still out there. Sorry for the rant!!!

A time Sert with red lock tight on it is gonna be your best bet. It might not sound ideal but it should work just fine. No helicoil

That’s exactly what I was gonna to do , had the kit picked out and everything (a little pricey at 344 bucks) but upon further inspection with a borescope it looks like the ground strap broke off and done some valve damage . Cylinder leak down was blowing air out everywhere so yay me !!!!! Pulling the head off . Hopefully the cylinder walls aren’t scored up at all . Love me some engines with 65 timing chains!🥴
