I see where i can get a simpson voyager sa2010 helmet relatively cheap. But I also see some other brand sa2015 helmets for around 150 dollars. The track where i get to play requires SA2005.

Are there tracks out that already require the 2010?

Is the quality of the older simpson Voyager worth 75 more than helmets like 2015 Conquer and zamp that I see on Amazon?

If it matters, the Voyager (non-Evolution) was a $300 helmet back before the SA2015 spec was issued. And it has a large eyeport (something you might not be able to put a price tag on).

I did my first track and they said this was to be the last year for the 2005.
Just what VERY little I know.

They're good for 10 years since certification, so 2010 one will be good through 2020.

If you can, get the SA2015.

so about how many years does a helmet last before it gets smelly and need to get replaced anyway? :)

Depends.

How often you use it, how hot it is when you do

I think most places allow the latest helmet cert, plus the two previous ones. 2005 should be good until the 2020 comes out. But I'd check with the specific organization, and as mentioned do consider a 2015 spec if only to stretch out the length of time that it will be accepted.

Get a helmet with a removable helmet liner so you can wash it. My current helmet has been disgusting for a while. My motocross helmet, which I sweat in waaay more is still as good as new with the removable liner. Track helmet is a SA2005 that is probably 8-9 years old. I'll get a SA2015 soon since mine will expire soon.

The more serious series require the current or previous helment certification.

So a SA2015 would have approximately 10 years of legal use vs appromately 5 for a SA2010. Is the SA2010 half the price? If not get the latter helmet.

Some sancition bodies allow M helmets for track day use, these are much cheaper than the SA rated helmets.

If I were giving advice, I'd say pay the premium for an SA2015. Reason is Optima, Goodguys, and other groups who have events which offer both autocross but also track, require an SA certification and want it new as possible. While they will accept a SA 2010, the premium you pay for a 2015 will pay off big time in the long run for track days.

Thanks all for the good feedback. After reviewing helmets I had my heart set on Simpson. The clearance voyager sa2010 was perfect for 220. After some serious thoughts and comments, I am going to go for 2015, but unfortunately it wont be a Simpson, as the price really leaps up.

I will go with something like a zamp and hope I dont get bit with the "you get what you pay for" situation.

www.discoveryparts.com is who I use. Ron has great customer service. Safe racer and OG Racing are a couple of other race shops that are rally good at what they do.

I went through SafeRacer for my SA2010 Voyager back in 2012, and I've also sourced Carbotech brake pads through them.

I think SCCA members still get a 10% discount.
