Have You Ever Been Deployed?

Twice myself, once with Army once with Air Force (long story) but irrelevant because I came back the same way I left…

my response to ”thank you” is I’d rather you thank the guys who left a piece of themselves over there…be it physical or mental, it’s heartbreaking to watch from the inside as well.

on a happier note, my grandpa was on Normandy Beach at the ripe old age of 16 (he lied to get out of orphanage) and after his passing we got a notice from a third party about a map that you can purchase.

what they did is input his name and service number, along with his unit into the database and it spits out a personalized map that showed where he, his platoon and/or his unit landed, marched, camped and fought.

….if I can find the map when I get home, I will post up a link

That's pretty cool. Had to take a long time to input all that data but it's nice someone cared enough to do it.

I find it oddly satisfying to be deployed. Don’t get me wrong I love being the family at home (wife and 3 year old) but there is a calmness to the chaos and doing the job. I miss the what we did and what we supported. I don’t think there’s another job I could do this well which is why I plan on being in as long as I can. I’m not even a super blue (Air Force) type of person. I’ve only been deployed 6 times so far but I’m sure it’ll be more in the future.

Interesting that you say that. It can feel good knowing that you are out there with your boys. It can be very motivating. My deployment could have been chill as hell and cool but it wasn't. If you have that good environment it can really be satisfying, I definitely would still be in if my deployment hadn't drained the life out of me. The camaraderie in the military can make you reach a state of nirvana. Despite my deployment I still had a small slice of it and I am pretty sure that is the reason why I still am very good friends with my Army buddies from 6 years ago so I know what you mean. They basically are my brothers.

They better be. 100% a brother. If we send our kids off, this is how it needs to be for each other. The rest of us need to understand, but many don’t. They’re too busy recreating mass segregation and division.

The family you have out there is definitely what makes it good. I don’t miss the rockets, mortars, and TBM’s but it comes with job. It’s being in the shit with your family out there. You never forget those moments. I’m glad there are plenty here in the forum. I even value our old timers and love to hear those experiences.

agreed on both…civilians won’t usually get it, but when you train, train, train to do a job and never/rarely get to use the skill (whatever it may be) it can be a real challenge to some.

Gratitude at it’s greatest for all that have served and continue to do so, along with their family members.
Most of my family were Veterans, and I really would’ve loved to follow in their path. I went a different route due to business opportunities I could not pass up, but I regretfully wish I would have served.

But I was not in the shit up on the Kuwait border, worked on General Schwarzkopf’s J1 shop so, yeah I was no hero.

I am most proud that with a coalition of overwhelming force we liberated Kuwait and came home quickly.

Just doing my job.
