I've recently been having difficulty shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. I noticed this a long time ago, but it was rare, so I didn't worry about it. However it is now happening more frequently (almost every time I drive it). I know the dealer won't take any action unless they can replicate it while it's in the shop. When I get some time, I plan to talk to the guys at the local speed shop about it. They probably know more than the Ford techs anyway. It shifts perfectly otherwise, but the 1-2 problem is starting to get really annoying.

Anyone else have this problem? BTW I am running BG Synchroshift fluid, but the problem was there occasionally before the fluid change.

Thanks.

Nature of the beast I think. Mine is the same even after bg fluid and mgw shifter. There’s a notch there that is always pissing me off! It’s like the achellis heal of the manual 5.0

Mine went away after I got the mgw reverse pin adjusted properly. Otherwise the stock shifter always had a nibble unless the speeds were matched perfectly.

I called George at mgw to ask him if I should take it apart and adjust the pin. He said if it’s smooth when car is off don’t bother as it’s the nature of the mt82. Now you have me reconsidering again..lol
Taking that boot off is my only hesitation though

I don't blame your hesitation. That boot is a total PITA.

Mine has a lock out 1-2 shift and usually the 2-3 shift. MGW did nothing really to fix it but I can NLS into 3rd sometimes and it goes perfect. 1-2 nothing helps over 6800. If I take it to the 7800 limiter I have to wait until it drops under 6800 to finally go in. I was going to get the BG fluids but sounds like it won’t do anything. My friend is a trans tech there at our local dealership, and the place is pretty mod friendly. He believes it’s clutch lock out and going to see if he can speak with one of the “heavy line” guys to get a clutch replacement. He works on the Automatic line side. But said they will most likely claim it’s not normal operation shifting that high unless racing and ford wouldn’t warranty a clutch racing.. so seems like I have to buy a clutch maybe. Thing is I don’t know how much damage is done from all the lock out and grinding. I have done it a lot. But it happens anytime over 6800 so it’s happened more then a few times

Mine doesn't grind - it just doesn't want to go past the neutral point when shifting 1-2, and I'm seldom near redline. I've also run it near redline a few times with no problem. I have tried double-clutching, and that helps.

Yeah that's clutch. The pressure plate isn't very stiff, so at high rpm it's not quite enough sometimes. I've done quite a few 7500+ quick shifts and it works perfectly if I time it right. A little off and it'll lock out. A slightly more robust clutch is in the future plans.
