Ok, before flaming my thread..... YES, I did use "Search" feature for clunking and found several on it, but seemed dominated by manual tranny issues.

I've only had my GT (base) Auto with 3.55 LSD about two weeks now. But I am noticing more frequently, like every morning, a very audible and tactile (jerky) "CLUNK" when putting Gear lever from P to either R, D, or S. Doesnt seem to matter much if heading out forward or reverse. There is a metallic clunk or clanking sound like two mis-matched parts engaging.

Is this a common experience for other 5.0 Slushbuckets out there?

It seems to go away after maybe 5 miles driving when the car/fluids heats up.

But during the first mile or so, I've heard it more than just that initial tranny engagement leaving a parked stopped position. I've heard it when going right into Sport (S) mode and when it does the rev-matching thing. Not just the abrupt jerk or braking action the revving does, but still hear a distinct metallic "thunk" during downshifts. But again, that completely goes away even in S mode after a few miles of driving it.

Thoughts>?????

Isn't it the same 6R80 Select Shift Auto Transmission in the EcoBoost and V6 as well as the GT?

There have been a number of people, myself included that have mentioned a clunking noise with the auto. Only from P>R, P>D, D>R or R>D. Other shifts are fine.

One thing I noticed, It takes an extremely long time to complete the shift. I'm talking a good 3 seconds. It doesn't sound long but count them once. For me the problem is I'm much used to the transmission shifting MUCH quicker so my foot is already off the brake, not giving it gas yet but it still clunks. If I just patiently hold my foot on the brake and wait a few seconds for it to shift, no clunk.

I was hoping Ford would notice shift pressure is off on those shifts and re-program on an ECU update but haven't heard anything yet. I would also think an aftermarket tune should be able to resolve this if it is shift pressures.

Yes, I believe they are all the same transmission. Mine makes the metal clank when I shift to drive and every shift you mentioned. However, I aways have my foot on the brake, and it still clanks.I was at the dealer last week and the service manager was waiting for the ford hotline to call her back. She did mention replacing the drive shaft, and I told her from what Imread on here, it doesn't fix it.She's suppose to call me this week, about what they are going to do.

I've got another appt. For the trans metal clank this Fri.The service manager called te Ford hotline, and they told her to see if any Mustangs on the lot made the noise, I guess so Ford could say it was NORMAL.Since this dealer only sells Lincolns, there weren't any Mustangs. The service manager is very good, and she told Ford this is not NORMAL, so they are going to go through a list of possible causes for problem.
