Hello All,

I wanted to get a better understanding of the gear ratios that our Mustangs come with.

For example, my Base GT Manual came with 3.31 gears and I know that the PP comes with 3.73 gears.

I kind of have an understanding of what that means (Being able to drive both would probably be the best explanation). I get the sense that with the PP 3.73, you would have to shift much quicker.

With my gears I can stay longer in between gears but the PP from what I read, you would have to shift sooner.

Is that correct?

Perhaps that gives better performance?

Here is a scenario:

On a perfect day at the lowest elevation with the best Gas, 93 octane, if I were to race a GT with the 3.73, I suspect the PP GT would reach 60 quicker than mine with the 3.73 gears.

Is my assumption correct?

I specified the elevation and gas because Ford states you get the true 435hp at the appropriate RPM on 93 octane gas. And at a lower elevation the cars would breathe the best (at least that is what I have come to understand).

Anyways, if you can educate me, it would be appreciated.
Sorry if I have it all wrong.

Not interested in racing or getting better gears or anything, just curious,
thanks.

Do you mean to say that both cars have 3:73 gear ratios? If so then the outcome would be the same depending on the driver.

Sorry, i probably worded it wrong.

Meaning my car with the 3.31 against a PP Car with 3.73.

Both Manual of course and everything else almost being equal.

yes and no..... gears come into play more when power is involved. A 3.31 gear car will keep the car in the power band longer per say than a 3.73 car will. You can "over" gear a car where it actually hurts you for the mods you have done. lets say you have 2 cars with the exact same mods....but one has 3.31 gears and the other has 3.73.... the 3.73 car "may " get out of the hole quicker, but....may suffer top end by having to shift before the finish line. where as the 3.31 car is just approaching shift rpm crossing the line.

Correct you would shift sooner, and you would 'feel' more TQ over the 331's.

3.73 is the number of horses in the rear differential. The higher the number, the less it slips because there are more hooves.

Most magazines or reviews seem to choose the PP when trying to get good 0 - 60 times.

I have not tried to do any in my car yet.

But I wonder if on a good day I could achieve numbers below 5 seconds.
