Gear on front wheel hub

I recently installed a set of Eibach 15mm spacers on the front. I had to remove the rotor to install new bolts. As I did this I noticed on the inner part of the hub a gear that I couldn't figure our what it was connected to. Then of all things, I didn't take a photo of it. What is this gear for?

Only thing I can think it could be is the ABS tone ring. It doesn't directly connect to anything, driving the wheel sensor signal over an air gap.

I have no idea what a ABS tone ring is.

It's the toothed wheel that drives the ABS sensor signal to the ABS control unit. One for each wheel for a 4-channel ABS system.
