Thanks buddy, if the strut is still in the car can this nut be safely removed without having to compress the spring?

I wouldn't, it's not safe, even though I know some have. Why do you need to remove it?

It's worked loose and the strut is knocking, so my thinking was to replace it with a new nyloc nut.

I can see why you shouldn't remove that nut without a spring compressor when the strut is out of the car but when it's still in the car the spring is compressed, I can tell there isn't any load on it as I can nearly turn it with my fingers.

Just not a good idea. Chances of anything happening is very low but it's not a good idea to leave that under compression without something. You can probably just tighten it rather than replace it. I had to do that within a couple months of my first suspension install and it remained tight for 2.5 years.

I can confirm that the nut will come off safely whilst the strut is still on the car, I chucked some Loctite on it and torqued it back up. I couldn't put a new nut on as the dealer didn't have one in stock.
