Ford Motor Company today announced the upcoming availability of the Shelby GT5.00 in response to complaints from GT350 and GT350R buyers who are unhappy that their new vehicles will be subject to a Gas Guzzler Tax. The GT5.00 will be shipped at no additional cost from the Flat Rock Assembly Plant in the trunk of every new 2016 Shelby GT350 and GT350R. However, the GT5.00 will not be available to the 137 buyers of the 2015 Shelby GT350 and GT350R models, because they will be receiving a really cool 50th Anniversary dash plaque.
”We know that most of the buyers of the GT350 and GT350R are on a strict budget and purchased their vehicles at invoice pricing, so every nickel is important to them,” said Freddie Flatplane, line manager for tiny accessory vehicles at Ford Motor Company. “With the GT5.00, they’ll be able to run to the grocery store without using any of the precious and expensive 93 octane fuel in their new vehicles.”
At just 77 inches, the GT5.00 will be the shortest vehicle in the Mustang lineup, and it will be delivered in a color scheme matching each customer’s GT350 or GT350R – including over-the-top stripes. However, the Painted Black Roof option will not be available, due to the need for solar gain coming through the roof to heat the GT5.00 cockpit during cold-weather months. During warmer months, special aerodynamically designed side windows slide open to cool the interior.
In addition, according to Flatplane, a Full Vehicle Cover will not be available for the GT5.00, “since everyone has an old barbecue grill cover lying around.”
Inside, driver controls include a flat-bottom, ABS plastic steering wheel with color-coordinated turn signal stalk, windshield wiper button and exterior lighting switch. And, in a first for any vehicle produced in North America, an extra-wide, nonadjustable vinyl Recaro driver’s seat is fitted; both the seat cushion and backrest bolsters are mounted to the GT5.00 doors for ease of entry and exit – and support during spirited around-town errands and high-performance driving events.
Although final numbers are not yet available, preliminary testing indicates that the aluminum-block, 520 cc Briggs and Stratton GT5.00 engine will produce at least 5.00 horsepower and 4.00 pounds of torque. Final certification is pending.
“The GT5.00 will be the most powerful tiny vehicle in the world,” said Flatplane. “Not only will it have enough power to get out of its own way, but also it will have sufficient thrust to tow the new Camaro SS hay wagon.”
Ford dealers will be required to opt into the Shelby GT5.00 program for $100, which covers the cost of the special titanium-ceramic wrench set necessary for GT5.00 maintenance and a full-color mouse pad for the dealership’s general manager. Delivery of the Ford GT5.00 and its companion Shelby GT350 or GT350R is assumed to be longer than anxious buyers will want to wait.
