For my speed event next week I need to fit a fire extinguisher and I have been unable to find any brackets to suit the S550. BKAuto in the US are currently developing one but it won't be ready for next week so I had no option but to do my own...

I was pleased to see the round bar running under the seat with plenty of space under it.

CAMS approved 1 kg fire extinguisher from local auto shop.

Alcohol swabs to clean everything because I'm going to use some double sided tape - just to make the install easier, not hold the extinguisher!

6mm dense rubber from Clarks Rubber to step out the bracket slightly from the round bar. Double sided tape both sides of the rubber strip.

Four hose clamps should do it and it certainly feels secure. CAMS regs state the extinguisher has to be in reach of the driver, able to be removed without tools or help of crew and withstand 25 Gs.
1.5 Kg of extinguisher @ 25G should equate to 375 N (37.5 kg of force), so each clamp needs to hold less than 10 Kg.

Tucked up out the way and virtually impossible to see. Moves with the electric seat.

Find out next week if it passes scrutineering.

Decent drive through the hills this morning and the bracket stayed put. The extinguisher remained tucked up under the seat and did not sag down to the floor. Good result.

Just in case anyone is using this thread as a guide to installing their own extinguisher, a few other pointers.

The double sided tape I used was the automotive badge / stripe tape as it is thin and wouldn't offer too much compliance as a thicker, padded tape might.

With my first attempt without the tape and just using two soft rubber spacers (old Lego model tyres!!) the bracket would sag down with just the weight of the extinguisher.

Swapping to the stiff rubber strip from Clarks Rubber plus the tape (although the tape was mostly to assist with positioning the bracket) has eliminated any sag.

Worth noting is the size of the hose clamp I settled on after a few trials. Australian made Tridon clamps 17 - 38mm were the Goldilocks size.

Also note the positioning of the clamps on the bracket. I found if you put a clamp towards the base of the bracket (left hand side in pic) the extinguisher wouldn't go in. Positioned as shown, the clamps do not impede the fitting of the extinguisher at all. Position the bracket on the round bar as shown and the extinguisher doesn't foul with any seat components.

The photos are no longer visible. Can you fix please as I will be adding an extinguisher when my car arrives (hopefully before Christmas!)

Not sure what's happening with Photobucket. I can't fix photos - must be their end.

Ahhh.. working again. Photobucket must have exterminated their bugs.

4 1/2 years later and the extinguisher hasn’t moved at all. Very secure for a cheap, home made solution.

Just saw this for the first time and read the whole thread. I should check the post dates before I 'like' posts from 4.5 years ago...:computerrage:

Heh heh in before....

Ha! Yes sorry to resurrect such an old thread but I saw one of our SA members was after a solution and I realised all my photos from this thread had been trashed by Photobucket (remember them?). So I've reattached all the images.

Because the extinguisher is tucked away under the seat so well I haddn't checked on it for ages and was pleased to see my handiwork was still holding up.
