Factory 20" wheel

They have 265/35 20" tires. Is 305/35 20" or 305/30 20" the recommended largest tire for the rear, keeping the stock rims? Will they need spacers? If so, what size? Thanks.

I would not advise a 305 tire on the factory 20x9"

285 would be the widest I would go.

Thanks, but going to a 285 isn't enough to justify a change. Are the rims not wide enough or will the 305's cause rubbing?

Wheels are not wide enough. Could you run them? Yes, but it wouldn't be safe and it's not going to be any better traction.

275/35 is the widest recommended 35 series tire by Michelin for the 20x9 wheel. Lower profile tires stretch less so they have less of a rim width range to work with compared to higher profile tires.

That said, the 265/35 are only 0.2" narrower than the 275/35 (10.7" section width vs 10.9" section width on 9.5" wide wheels) so the difference is fairly minimal.

For comparison, the minimum recommended rim width for a 305/30/R20 is 10.5" wide (up to 11.5" wide).
