Exhaust drone after welding.

I recently had my exhaust fall off while merging with traffic two days before I had BMR motor mounts added to my car to lower it down, so my Whipple supercharger wouldn’t rub up against my hood. The Shop took care of everything. I was fortunate enough not to have any damage to the exhaust with the exception of the bracket. they put it all together and gave me a call I said would you like us to weld it on for extra Safety and I said sure. It’s Corsa extreme exhaust quite loud and fun to drive around and my two sons love it. I got the car back and the exhaust sound changed. There’s sort of a low base type drone and since the boys were in the car when the exhaust fell off They were thinking something is wrong. It was quite traumatic. We almost got plowed by a big rig while sitting on the side of the road so it was all quite an experience for them. does anybody know if when you weld an exhaust along with your bracket does it change the tone because I’m getting a very low frequency bass drone underneath the car that wasn’t there before. My boys just wanted me to park the car. They thought something was wrong. I checked for codes and I know the S550 is really good about throwing codes if there’s anything wrong no matter what it is. We parked it. I sent an email to the shop. My boys want to go back and then to go over everything and make sure there’s no other issues before we ride in it again. They’re afraid something else going wrong they love the car. It’s sort of a bonding thing with us. They even named it so I put personal plates on it with the name. I could use some help from the Mustang community so I could show it to my boys. My Shop is really good. They work on very expensive cars, but they’re very down to earth probably just run it through a check anyway, but I really need some help out there. Thank you…

Sounds like a pipe is touching something metal somewhere

Sounds like they created some exhaust resonance after welding it. Like TonyT930 mentioned, it may be touching somewhere. If you can get under it take a look at how it sits. Remember, the exhaust will move too under load. So if it’s real close to anything it could be touching and causing resonance. Good news is that it’s an easy fix. Just some repositioning will correct it. At the bare minimum, take it back to the shop and have them inspect it.

Hello; My guess is the welding attached the exhaust to the car body or subframe is "solid" way. There is a reason the muffler & exhaust hangers are often some sort of flexible material. I call some of them rubber doughnuts. I have seen other types which look like strips of conveyor belt with metal brackets on the end.

Hello; The way things are crammed into a car it makes sense lowering the engine can mess with alignments of things. In addition to a possible exhaust drone I would check for a drivetrain vibration. The engine/transmission need to line up with the driveshaft and the rearend. Too much of an angle can cause the universal joints/ CV joints to bind a bit and vibrate. Does not seem too likely in a car. More often in lifted trucks/jeeps.

Hello; I am guessing they meant "safe" from exhaust coming apart more than safe in a sense of danger to you. Seems the shop did what you authorized so hard to make a call on their culpability on the exhaust part of the job.
I am curious as to the story of the Whipple and the decision to lower the motor rather than modify the hood. I have seen factory Mustangs with a Whipple installed but confess I did not notice the hood.

Hopefully, they didn’t weld a new hangar to the car body and weld it straight to the exhaust.
