Either way I do hope that it all gets sorted out. No matter the reason, we would all be upset to have our engine let go. That is definitely some luck though, it almost guarantees that the dealership is liable due to it being in their possession at the time of failure.

Depends on if he had a tune or other mods, they can still blame that. It seems that the majority of engine failures, as few as they may be, are actually factory defects.

There's a few that were tune related and it was obvious, but many of these seemingly random occurrences appear to be factory defects rather than tune related. Unfortunately the tune may exacerbate the severity of it however due to much higher power levels...sadly it's always to blame as well.

Maybe he has a different issue than you? According to BoostCocaine, his engine let go...your hasn't.
Why would he not share the results on a post BoostCocaine started two months ago?I say BS on his engine let go.

Because he doesn't give a crap about people on this forum...it's not like most people here actually know each other in person (a few might), just a bunch of pixels on a screen and ideas / thoughts / information being shared for mutual benefit by people you don't actually know.

Hey, guys. I recently sold the car back to Ford under GA Lemon Law. I didn't really want to talk about it until all the legal stuff was handled so I haven't been on the forums. The dealer never figured out what the issue with the engine was. After it caught fire they had no idea what the cause was. If you have any other questions let me know. I'll check this thread more often.

And if anyone doesn't believe that it happened I will gladly send a screenshot of my $7000 repair bill for the engine and steering gear that was damaged after the engine blew.

Did you get another car or no? Glad you got it handled.

I did but I didn't get another mustang. I was kinda scarred after the whole situation and how badly Ford handled it.
I take it you had a rod / bearing / piston failure? That metallic knocking now that I listened to the video again sounds like slop between the rod and piston or rod and crank.

But the low boost to me would suggest it's at the piston end, possible wrist pin failure?

That sounds viable to me. But the dealership never confirmed. Once the engine caught fire they called it dead and decided to replace the entire engine. I don't think they ever dug that deep.

Ok, I guess it really doesn't matter if they covered it under warranty. It's interesting that it caught fire, sounds like fuel was going where it shouldn't and also not being burned during combustion, thus accumulating and eventually catching fire.

I wonder if the fuel rail / pump burst or was leaking which resulted in an overly lean condition (hence destroying a piston, rod, wrist pin or bearing).

Well they said it was up on the lift and they heard an explosion. The oil pan blew out the bottom and there was flames. They had to grab a fire extinguisher. Lol

I believe that this is valve train related. I have the same sound but only around 1k rpm and have had it for as long as I can remember as the other poster had stated. I recently had pulled the valve cover to check on the camshaft cap bolts making sure that they were all tight, and even re-torqued them to spec which surprisingly made the whole engine a lot smoother afterwards! However the tapping is still present. I really feel like it's either an issue with the camshaft phasers or the HRFP gear. I understand that the 5.4L Fords have issues with phaser knock:

That might explain the very knocky sound of my engine when cold (not pinging), but like a metallic clanky sound. It's mildly present when warmed up too, developed within the first 1k miles just like yours. I've been a bit paranoid about it for a while, but was thinking it might be the HPFP.

So that makes 3 sources of ticking, knocking and clanking in a normally operating ecoboost engine: Injectors, High Pressure Cam Driven Fuel Pump and Cam Phasers. No wonder these things are clanky as all get out.
