Sounds like a collapsed lifter. Or an ecoboost equivalent.

Op let us know what you find out. Unlike the others, I'd say it's internal and serious, nothing in the vavle train that can "all of a sudden" start making noise except a cam phaser or chain issue. These bottom ends are weak, and you may be the first to have a still running but damaged bottom end. I built my engine on my kitchen table, so you might say I know them inside and out. (I know Red Neck). I can tell you it is way cheaper to repair if it is still running. Gets pretty expensive if you end up with a block like mine http://www.mustang6g.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53250
I wouldn't call the bottom end weak...for a factory bottom end it's fairly stout. You just pushed it too far ;-). Adam has achieve well under 11 seconds on a factory bottom end on quite a few cars that to my knowledge are still running just fine.

Remember this car only runs a 13.8~13.9 stock, a few skilled drivers have done 13.6 on both manual and auto's. You wanna see a weak bottom end, take a look that the overhyped boxer in the WRX's / STI's. I can find tons of cracked piston heads, blown rings and bent rods even on stock cars...not many 2.3L eb's have suffered that fate stock or even modified. In fact, I don't think there's a single 2016 that has period. THe few that have failed are all 2015's....

Regardless it would be great to hear on what the OP finds as the cause.

any updates on this?

I have the same sound but it only happens when the car decelerates while in park.

Hey, ford called yesterday. My engine blew up while they were test driving. If you're under warranty, take it in ASAP.

I have 16,320 miles on the car. No codes, no power loss, no abnormal behavior. I recently heard the "rattle" after I did my oil change to Pennzoil ultra 5w-30(4th one I did). Rattles for 1-2 seconds between 1000-900RPM while decelerating in Park, anything below or above that no rattle. While the car is in Drive or reverse, no rattle present.

When everything is up to normal temps the rattle is gone, so it's probably related to cold start?

Like I said it was serious, to bad it couldn't have been pulled apart before it let go. Been nice to know what goes first the rod or piston/wrist pin

My bet's on the wrist pin. Only reason for a cylinder head to crack is knock. Wrist pins are subjected to both tension and compression stresses as are the rods, bearings and crank. The bottom end is fairly stout for a factory car.

The wrist pins in 2015's seem to be one of those "teething" pains of a completely new engine and first year production....2015's are known for that issue which is why they purportedly (yet there is no official confirmation I've seen) re-designed the wrist pins.

A floating cylinder would certainly make for some noise! The real question with the wrist pins is, is there a design issue or a MANUFACTURING issue. Either one can result in the same failures. So far as I'm aware no 2016's have blown yet but I'm sure some one will break one before years end...

I honestly think the whole situation is BS. I've had this noise on a cold start for about 30k miles now and a very knowledgeable mechanic informed me that the camshafts are loud on a cold start when they are not in their optimal position. It is what it is. I have 44k miles, full bolt ons, e85 port injection, and to top it all off a very very early 2015 engine. My car still pulls leaps and bounds harder than the day I purchased it and otherwise runs like a top.

Maybe he has a different issue than you? According to BoostCocaine, his engine let go...your hasn't.
