Our manuals state that we should use 87 octane. Ford says that to get 310 hp we need to use 93 octane. From what I understand our tuners are creating tunes for 91 and 93 octane only. The difference in cost between regular gas and premium gas is significant (I know significant could be debated). Is there a reason tuners aren’t creating tunes for the 87 octane suggested by Ford as the gas we should be using? Would there be a market for an 87 octane tune to get the most out of our cars with this level of gas?

87 is not the gas you should be using obviously since ford clearly stated that we lose over 10% of our power when using regular. Because of this it wouldn't make any sense for a tuner to tune for 87. I would imagine that would not be safe for the engine either

Edit: You can run 87 but the engine is not going to perform at its best

Higher octane allows more ignition advance, more boost. Higher octane resists detonation better (pinging) so you can get more power from the engine.

Is premium that much more expensive? Assuming you drive 15,000 miles a year, and you average 24 MPG (meaning lots of grins), and premium is $0.25 per gallon more, your daily "good gas cost" is $0.43. That's the price you pay in premium gas expenses for grins from ear-to-ear.

Pretty cheap actually, eh?

10% hp loss at 5000 rpm and higher, IIRC per dyno plots

In my town 87 is 2.44 and 93 is 2.76, that's 35.88 a tank and I fill up 3 times a month. If I were to fill up with 87, it would be 31.72 a fill up, that's $12.48 difference a MONTH from 87 to 93, which nets to ~$150 a YEAR, I just really hope $150 a year isn't a significant amount of money.

I will be uploading my Livernois tune at lunch !!! :) They sent me a tune file for both 93 and 91 at my request. I only plan to use the 91 tune when I go out of town and I'm not sure if I can find 93 in other areas. I sent my info and received both files within 3hrs
