I ran through a metal debris field early this morning and 1 huge chunk of metal punched a hole in the transmission pan? Not really sure what the damage is but at a minimum I am looking at an transmission pan replacment I imagine. Anyone have a guesstimate of what the dealership will charge for the trans pan replacement?

Did you shut down before the engine lost all oil?

What kind of “metal debris” field would be on a roadway? That sucks!!!!!

Comp coverage via insurance is your friend

Not sure on a replacement cost, but it'll more than likely call for a couple hours by the book.
and be careful with reporting such a claim... because even though some Ins. Co’s will tell their customers “oh, no, your rates won’t go up on a comprehensive claim”... they can and do.

I had a comp claim 3 yrs ago with my prior 2011 Genesis Coupe - doing 45 on a stretch of rural road @ midnight, damn deer ran out from the woods on the right side, full blast right into the passenger side of the car... slammed right into the rear 1/4 panel (and cracked the rear interior panel), bounced along the passenger door and finally off the front fender. I called Ins. Co. because of the scope of damage, was told “don’t worry about it, it’s a non-motor vehicle accident, comprehensive, your rates will not be affected” and I made sure to have the Rep confirm that 2x... After a $7k repair bill, which included a complete rear exterior 1/4, a complete rear interior panel, a new door skin, PDR of the front fender plus prep and paint —— next time my policy renewed, BLAM, my renewal was double the normal annual premium.

So comprehensive may sound like a good idea, but if your Ins. Co. tells you that a Comp claim won’t raise your rates... just be prepared.

My best guess is some drunk redneck lost his recycling cargo on the highway and kept going. It was 4 am and raining when I ran into it at 70 mph. Had I tried to avoid the metal piece I hit I may have punctured a tire and lost control. It was right before an exit so I immediately exited, shut down the car and snapped the photo. You can see there is trans oil coming out while parked so there was trans oil present prior to shutting it down. I called the police and told them about the situation. By the time they showed up 4 more cars and a semi had been taken out as well.

Whether or not I file a claim depends on the final cost of repairs.

pan should only be about ~$120 in parts. the labor would probably be slightly more because they either have to lift the engine up or drop the subframe to install it

Dealership called to tell me the oil pan was not damaged, it was the transmission that took a hit, and a bunch of other stuff under the car was damaged. About 4k. 2k in parts and 2k in labor.

Comp would be my route. Hopefully you have a low deductible.
How are you able to use comprehensive insurance when the damage was done due to hitting an object while driving the vehicle? The second you mention the car was moving and hit something that damaged a part the insurance company is going to go through the collision portion of the policy.

Unless you can somehow convince them that a rock jumped by itself and hit your oil pan while the car was parked?

500 deductable. Hopefully they don't discover structural damage and it is limited to a transmission pan, catalytic converter and some other small items here and there.

Had an oil pan replaced on a car once before I could do that kind of thing myself. Was $600, and they had to hang the engine and drop the subframe.

Whoa, yours came with the optional unicycle! That’s gonna cost some bucks!

[just trying to make light of a shitty situation]

How much is the repair estimate up to? Can’t you hold the town responsible for the debris on the highway and have them reimburse for the damages?

The repair cost just shy of 4k. The biggest expense was the exhaust. The transmission pan assembly was under 100 bucks. I am going to file a claim with the SCDoT and see if I can get them to reimburse me and the insurance company.
