Im seriously contemplating getting the Magnaflow exhaust for my ecoboost. What advantages are there with the catback vs just doing the axle back? Ive watched an install video and it seems as the size of all the tubing will be the same so it just seems as if going with axle back I would have the same performance and sound but pay less.

If you want sound axle back is ok. If you want performance turbo back is choice

Catback also gets rid of a very restrictive resonator which will change the sound and probably give some performance. The cat will still be a choke point though, so for best performance you would need a turboback with a high flow or no cat if legal in your area.

^ What they said. Axleback will improve the sound, catback will give you some improved performance and a turboback gives you the greatest performance improvement. I would've loved to go with a turboback but it's illegal here in NY. There are probably ways around it but I'm not aware of them.

Check out the exhaust sound clip thread once you decide, lots of videos of the various exhaust systems.

I'm looking at getting the Magnaflow Competition Catback from Lethal Performance (heck of a price). I am wondering though, if a aftermarket down pipe that is not Magnaflow would work with it. THe MAgnaflow's are my favorite out of the EcoBoost exhaust. I do like the Borla S type. But, you can get the Magnaflow Catback for 70-80 dollars more.

paying $500 for a axle back is about the same as just lighting the money on fire imo. you can just go to an exhaust shop and pay about $100-150 to have the mufflers removed and tips welded on and get the same sound. Cat back should be the only option and turbo back for most performance.

I have the Magnaflow Competition and I love it. As for the downpipe, most aftermarket catbacks have similar pipe sizes so I'd think you'd just have to buy one that's compatible with the catback.

I went with the MagnaFlow Street Series cat-back since I will likely add an aftermarket downpipe later. With the stock downpipe, the exhaust is slightly louder than stock, but much deeper sounding.

If you're set on the Competition Series but can't decide between axle-back or cat-back, check out this YouTube video where you can see inside both the stock resonator and muffler. As other posters have stated, the stock resonator is fairly restrictive. It's also quite heavy compared to the MagnaFlow mid-pipe.[ame=""]
