I'm hitting the 1 year mark on my Ecoboost (Along with almost 40k miles) and i got into a really bad APR with this car and with the mileage it just isn't worth a re-fi so it's time to go while i can still afford to get out from underneath it.

With that being said and the stuff we like to do, (we like to travel but like to have the option to carry a few things (think dogs and beach) and i'm really leaning towards the idea of a XSUV like a Honda HR-V or Jeep Renegade. I'm wondering if any of you have any experience with a vehicles in that size range. I'm looking right now at either a Mini Clubman OR Countryman seriously. I live near the high desert in San Bernardino (Actually i work up there) so being able to venture off road for dirt roads is a plus, plus a decently equipped S in both those models will run mid to high 20's which is a plus.

Have a 2011 VW Tiguan 4Motion in the fleet that has been absolutely bulletproof for five years.

Still rattle-free too.

I rocked a rental Jeep Compass at a local Rallycross last year....had a blast

Ran top 3 in Stock AWD in three events, and even took first in a sloppy wet one :headbang:

and best of all - you can buy these things dirt cheap!

Stay away from the Renegade. I owned a Trailhawk version for 11 months - one of the worst vehicles I've ever owned.

Seriously check out the Mazda CX-5 with the 2.5L as well. It's an awesome ride. My wife likes her Cherokee with the V6, didn't care for the 4 cyl.

We had a rental Jeep Compass for a week and that thing was fucking awful and would not recommend.

Ha! They must only be good when beating the sh!t out of them

Not sure how excited I'd be to have one in my driveway, but it was pretty fun to beat Subie WRX's around the rally-x course. Must be built tougher than we'd think, because I hammered it mercilessly for two days straight, over rocks and bumps and mudholes...

Had a 2007 Compass too, and it was definitely a cheaply made POS. Can't say I'd recommend one, although from what I've read they've improved a bit since that first year.....

The Tiguan that replaced it is a far better rig.
