One of the three things I wanted to compare and specifically tested on my test drive/research visit to the dealer was shaker pro vs non.

I took my iPod and cable that I use in my car currently. Same source as I'm used to in order to eliminate source differences in the comparison.

First I tested shaker. Played parts of songs I listen to regularly with various dynamic changes in them. Volumes up and down, adjusted EQ, faded all around the car. For a factory stock system it's pretty good. Is it a $3000+ aftermarket built system? No of course not, but unless you are a serious audiophile (which most aren't), or you just like overpowering hammering hear you a mile away bass, Shaker pro is good.

Next I tested non Shaker - I thought something was broken by comparison. I moved the balance and fade all over and adjusted the "eq". Horrible. I mean it's not even a comparison. It was so bad it hurt. I asked the salesman more than once if he was sure it wasn't defective.

I ordered 401a. No way I could enjoy music on the non shaker. Add in memory seats, BLIS, etc and the cost is a no brainer.

How anyone can even compare 401a Shaker pro to the other sound options I will never understand.

If you don't like or listen to music at all then ok, but if you do and you don't want to drive your car straight off the lot to have the stereo system replaced it has to be 401a.

I'm with CMC#5... I got the 400 and really like the heated and cooled seats. The sound system is fine for my likes in music. I had a huge sound system in a Crwn Vic. and when I wanted to listen to news /sports the stations would drive me half nuts with the back ground drum beats coming thru the woofer. I considered the Blis system but the Pony isn't the only car I drive and I was concerned that I would come to depend on the radar system too much instead of actually looking (other cars don't have BLIS). Good luck in your decisions.

I chose the 400a over the 401a, although memory seats would have been nice, it was not worth all of that money. You can get speakers aftermarket that will blow out the 401a package. The 400a sounds plenty good enough. Better than most vehicles in my opinion.

I changed my order from a base to a 400A. I was at Crossroads ford in Charlotte and they had 9 Mustangs inside their huge showroom. I tried all 3 stereos and the 400a was noticably better than the base, but the 401a was only ever so slightly better(to my ears) than the 400a. All 3 desperately needed speaker upgrades. My guess is a base system with the right speaker upgrades would sound better than a 401a. the only reason i went with the premium was to get rid of the 4.5 inch screen and plethora of 1980's buttons on the base head unit. None of the Mustangs have a system that will touch the Mark Levinson in the Lexus GS350(my moms car) A similar system in the mustang would be worth the upgrade price.
