I think I'm splitting hairs here but wanted to get a second opinion (or third or fourth). Looking to upgrade RAM in my computer. Z370 chipset which supports up to 2666MHz. Not a powerhouse but it does the job. i7 8700, specs say it supports up to 41.6GB/s on the memory and supports dual channel. Currently have 16GB (8x2) 2666MHz 1.2V 288pin PC-21300 CAS CL19. Computer has 4 slots, supports up to 64GB RAM.

I'm trying to open up not only more capacity but see if I can open it up with a bit more speed. CL19 is pretty darn good so I'm not expecting much more. Can't find bandwidth specs on all the RAM out there but would like to get as close to what the processor can handle. One of the brands starts at 2400MT/s which if my conversions are correct is way overkill for my processor.

Anyways, this is what I have found so far. WWM6GD?
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2666 (PC4 21300) Desktop Memory Model F4-2666C19D-32GVR
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2666 (PC4 21300) Desktop Memory Model F4-2666C15D-32GVR
Nemix Ram Silverline 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 2666 PC4-21300 PC Gaming Memory

I'd go for that middle G.skill CL15 kit.

...actually I would dump the Intel and pick up an x570 AMD board and run ram at 4000mhz in conjunction with a shiny new 5000-series

This computer is likely going to our eldest. Extra RAM is for all the applications he runs simultaneously. Dear lord man, this generation took look at ADD from my generation and said "hold my organic sugar free juice box made from biodegradable naturally occurring material by a non-profit non-corporate organization"

Does that thing run Winders™ ?
Will be going to Winders 11 here soon as soon as it is released externally

More importantly, can it run Crysis?
No idea. Neither of us play Crysis. He plays Destiny 2 and loves the increased speed and framerates on my computer. My games are low requirements.

I'd seriously hold off on Windows 11 until they shake some of the launch bugs out. I used Windows 10 at multiple points during the beta. It was basically still in beta for the first 6 months or so of "release". I don't expect any different of 11.

...wait, this is your son's build. Use the kid as a guinea pig! :giggle:

We've got three machines we use for work, so stability is more important than new features. I might test things out on the "HTPC" build I've got (3800XT, 16GB at 3600mhz, 5700XT, 1TB WD SN850).

Technically speaking I'll be the Guinea pig before my son when we internally release Windows 11. By the time it goes public I'll know how to use it.

I really like the new Gen Intel processors. Not the 14nm but the 10nm stuff. Unfortunately that means I will need to spec everything and build it myself. If I ever get time, I'll be researching the 10nm mobos to see who has one. Asus is likely there already with good offerings.

Don't go Intel, man. They don't even have a 10nm desktop part out yet. I'm also very skeptical of their claims about Alder Lake vs. AMD's 5000-series (that you can buy right now, at or below MSRP).

Intel has done so many shady things with their "benchmarks". They'll run exotic cooling to hit the numbers. Or, they'll post the speeds their CPU's can hit...for about 10 seconds before severely thermal throttling. My favorite is when they run cherry-picked synthetics. Especially when they use chips without threat mitigating micro-code enabled.

When all of that fails, they outright buy review outfits.

What does he run to need 32GB ram ?
Kid has steam, discord, destiny 2, twitch, and a music stream of some sort going all simultaneously. Use to have this nonsense application Vanguard running as well but I shut that nonsense down real quick and in a hurry.

Not at my desk! If I find used tissues he is going to find redirects to sesame street and every kids site I can find. He'll be unconsciously be singing the Barney song for months.

Lets hope he's not using Sesame Street or you'll be putting in redirects to Pornhub 😂
