Go your own way
I can relate to where you're coming from. The Cobra emblem is awesome in it's own right, even though it has become an icon representing a certain level of performance from the car, and achievement for the owner.
It really is a quick, positive outward sign of what the car/driver being viewed is all about. This particular sigil is made all the more unique in that is fairly recognizable even outside the circle of the "car guys", thus leading to worries that the "un-authorized" or out-of-canon application thereof could lead to the dilution of the sub-set's special status, or confusion among those not "in the know".
All that said (whew!), if that's the sight that will make you smile a little wider when you walk up to your ride, go for it.
Plus, if Ford could hang the moniker on a re-bodied Pinto in the Seventies, no one should give you any flack for doing similarly to the most advanced (road) Mustang ever.
