Clunky shifting help?

I have a MT Ecoboost and am having some shifting issues.

Some days, the car shifts beautifully, but more often than not I'm experiencing quite a bit of "clunky" shifting. Especially 1st to second and second to third.

It's not that I have to force the shifter into position, but rather it doesn't go in very smooth. At first, I thought there was something wrong with the gates, but random periods of excellent shifting makes me wonder otherwise...

I'm good at shifting with many, many years experience, but even altering my method of shifting doesn't seem to help when shifting feels bad. The shifting seems very randomly good or bad for a few days on end.

Is this a common issue?
Any way to remedy this?

I find that moving the lever into 1-2-1-2 before taking off prevents any thuds whatsoever

MGW/Barton shifter, change to good synthetic manual tranny fluid to improve the smoothness. Wont get rid of the thud though
