I needed to get a Carfax for a vehicle I'm selling. Carfax wanted $45.

I found CheapCarFax.com which buys them in bulk and charges $6 to run a VIN for you.

It's the real deal all done real-time. At least for the one VIN I paid for. Can be accessed on their website for 2 months where you can print or save as PDF.

FYI, good thing I sprung for the Carfax or maybe not if impossible or too long to fix. The vehicle had been stored and unregistered at times over the years. 1991 model year I bought new. Earliest Carfax entry was a registration in 2013. Title shows original purchase date but it appears the state doesn't give Carfax data that was archived due to some period of inactivity. Waiting to see what/when Carfax will do to fix. I sent them a copy of the title and also a history from MVD showing archiving. Won't be good if I have to convince a buyer nothing unusual about a Carfax for a 1991 MY confirming one owner but zero history before 2013. Sigh.

Why did you need one to sell it?

1. To include in ads.

2. 34 years is a long time. Wanted to be sure I remembered everything and if certain things were in the Carfax such as the door repair after an armed standoff with an outlaw biker that struck my passenger door in a '92 road rage incident. He told the cops after surrendering his weapon was because I took a cloverleaf (remember them) too slow. When cornered dumb biker swings a chain at me with a 1911 and then a passing lady cop. For the record, anyone who knows me will testify I never drive slow. BTW, since that repair did not appear in the Carfax, they may purge repair/service records if a vehicle goes unregistered for years.

3. I Like to know what the other party in a negotiation knows. I had no way of knowing otherwise but... saved me from looking like a deer in headlights when a buyer asks why Carfax says the vehicle was first titled 20 some years after it was built.

Gotcha. They use to come around when I had my shop when they were first starting, but I never gave out information on customers vehicles. Wasn’t my place to do so. I’m assuming it’s all done at the Insurance provider level now.

I asked the Cadillac body shop that painted my Mustang over the top stripes about that and they said they don't report anything but insurance always does. That being the case, most/all body shops don't report since a waste of time for insurance work and pisses off customers for self paying.
