Do I have one for you guys.

About 8 months ago my girlfriend's 2014 Ford Escape with +150k miles started to have a check engine light. Long story short, turns out the issue was the cat. She got them replaced by Bob's Cheap @S$ Car Repair (mostly joking, but not really). Firstly, they used a generic catalytic converter because she didn't want to pay the extra money for the oem part  and she refused to take the car to her local Ford dealer because "they have a bad reputation" in her area.

So after the repair she noticed that her remote start stopped working. She does the remote start procedure - the engine turns over - ALMOST fires up - then dies. And just to clarify, her remote start was working perfectly before the cat replacement.

She took it back to Bob's Cheap @S$ Car Repair and they told her it needed to be reprogramed (I called BS) but she had them do it anyway. This did nothing of course. They then tell her she needed a new battery cable because there was a tiny bit of corrosion (I again called BS) they replaced that and it did nothing, of course. They then said it was her battery. At this point I was fed up with this shop she had been going to (against my advisement) so I tested her battery myself - and admittedly it was a little low with it being +4 years. But since it was summer, I told her she could probably get away with not changing it until fall.

So since then, every day she tries to remote start her car. And very randomly it will work. Maybe, one out of ever thirty times. Doesn't matter if the engine is hot or cold - its completely random when it chooses to work.

Last week she takes her car to Sam's Club to have them replace the battery. Unfortunately this did not fix her remote start issue.

What could it be? What are her options? Any suggestions?

I theorize that the new cats did not have the correct spacing between the o2 sensors and that it somehow tripping the computer and killing the process. But I don't see any codes popping up on my scanner. So I have no way to prove any of it.
