Hey all
great forum.

I'm trying to decide on axle back or cat back system for my mustang that's on order.

Am I correct in thinking that the axle back systems seem to retain a deeper noise and X-pipes increase sound level and raspyness for want of a better word lol
I'm nervous ordering a cat back only to find it just too loud :-s

I can listen to clips all day long BUT I haven't ever heard one outside of stock cans so have no clue as to how loud cat back are compared to axle backs....

Would it be better to order Axle back and add H or X pipe later if I was unhappy with the result ?

One point of note I have also noticed, one system is made solely for European Mustangs by Borla and has a different resonator design BUT not X-pipe albeit supposedly straight through.... The retailer says its for EC fitment but I don't understand why the normal cat back wouldn't fit. Is the connection joint any different for EC Mustangs ? or is it just to do with noise levels ? (its $400 more too :-( )

Any advice appreciated

Thanks all
Cheers
OG

To the letter of the law if you fit any type of exhaust that is not type approved for the vehicle you commit an offence so thats most of us on here. The Borla European exhaust will have type approval. All the US systems fit our cars no difference in joints or mounts .
Loads and loads of You Tube clips only you can decide. If there are any meets near you go along and all owners will happily rev up for you.

Hey OG,

From having JUST done my exhaust there's a few differences.

X-pipe, H-pipe, Smaller resonater (or Y-pipes for the 2.3L T) - all replace the gigantic (and stupidly heavy) stock resonator, which takes a lot of the sound out of the car for one.
H pipes going to make it more deeper (albeit way harder to get your hands on)
X pipe will make the car more racey sounding ("Nascar" sound)

Now, the argument between cat-back and Axle-back Is a kicker. If you're running on an Ecoboost, it's cat-back 100% of the time, axle-back does virtually nothing for the car and it's almost like what the chavs do when they put a cherrybomb on their clios... I digress.

Cat-backs will not be 'too loud' you can get both H-pipes and X-pipes with Back boxes (Mufflers) that then make the sound a bit quieter, less drone etc.

Issue with the Axle-backs is also that you have to cut the current exhaust pipes off (From the back boxes, guides on youtube) and clamp the new one onto it!

Axle-back for the GT best result I've seen was a Roush (On stock cat-back pre-mufflers). But yes, in short you could get an axle-back and then add a H/X-pipe, equally you could get them first and then look for an axle-back to refine the noise.

I'd personally get down to any Meets going and get people to show off their Exhausts, I hosted one in the Midlands, and we have 6 GT's turn up, each and every one of them had different exhausts and different sounds. It's the best way to listen to the exhaust, because you don't know what you'll want until you hear it in person really. Youtube only does so much!

Errrrm, check the meets thread at the top of the UK section.

We've got a couple of gents doing a tour of the UK - One stock Ecoboost and one Roush AB GT + Another bloke (Cant remember whom) going from the London Area to Lands-end then up to Burton, Carlisle and then beginning a North Coast run in Scotland.

NC500 would be one of the best, but that's a bit of a drive to get up to! But there will be plenty of videos from that (end of next month) so can hear comparable exhausts (hear stocks, and different kinds under the same microphone instead of on youtube where you have different mics and playback devices which makes it hard to pick out the finer audio detail)

Ipswich is pretty under represented here IIRC, you maybe one of our first guys here from there... Speaking of which, I'm going to kick off a 'Map' for us so we all know the rough locations where everyone is should help with meets.

you will be fine with catbacks. the bass or raspiness really comes from x or h pipe

go with borla or magniflow and you cant go far wrong ... both don't get drone

If you go for an axle back the original silencers can be carefully cut off and could be reinstalled later. They also fit in the boot to get them home or back to be reinstalled at a later date. The original exhaust if replaced with a full cat back needs a transit van to be moved about.....

Personally I love proper V8 sounds and lots of noise a la TVR with baffles out, I have had full cat back systems on various Monaro's, however the Rousch Axle back on my Mustang GT is the best of the lot. Not too drony, absolutely bellows when you put your foot down, pops on gear changes - its perfect and was ÂŁ650 fitted.

I was thinking hard on the Flowmaster American Thunder Axle back.
Anybody got one or heard one?

Not looking for load, raspy or pops & farts. Just want to have a deep US V8 burble but amplified. From the videos, this one seems the best I can find. Worried it'll be different in the flesh

I second that. Very pleased with the Roush Axleback. Adding a H-pipe or X-pipe is always an option if you find it too quiet, but I think it's just about the sweet spot. ÂŁ600 fitted in my case :-)

Those with the Roush systems did you buy and fit in the UK? Its near top of my list but still considering all options. I'm tempted to go 1 stop shop and get a fitted system to avoid having to try and fit it on the road outside my house as I have neither a drive big enough for the car or a garage...

Bought from Nemesis UK online, with forum discount and free delivery, then got it fitted locally (NI) by Momentum Motorsport who charged me an hour's labour

Any rumour is enough to warn me off, thanks for the heads up. Back to looking at Roush it is then
