They were probably just trying to get by without replacing the battery. These bizzare effects will be popping up alot in another year or so on the forums when everyones battery gives up the same time and they start flashing and beeping lol...

The terminals on current battery are tight right? Not lose at all? I spent a lot of time on BMW e46 forums when I had mine. There were may threads about weird and sporadic electrical glitches like this. Most of the time it was either the battery itself, or the terminals were lose.

It sounds from the OP's description exactly what happens when you hit the start button without pushing the brake pedal down.

Maybe the OP is either not pushing it down sometimes or there is an issue with the brake pedal sensor that registering to start the car?
