Can't decide

Well guys having been a devout Audi man for years I felt that it was time for a change after having a few warm audis ..... 2011 S4 saloon, 2014 SQ5, 2014 S3 saloon (especially as they just won't release a RS3 saloon in the uk ......... Cook wits!! ) .

At the moment I am torn between the full fat 5.0GT manual or the new focus RS , now I know this is a awesome mustang forum but would like to hear anyone else's story on how they came to choose their mustang.
My head says be sensible and get the 5dr hatch ( almost certain the wife is going for a focus st diesel hatch on a very cheap lease deal so this could be the sensible choice to allow the mustang [emoji48]) but the heart says go for the V8 and RWD but I am stuck as prices between them make no odds , neither does fuel economy as I work offshore month on month off so six months of the year it won't really do that much mileage ( wife might use it for dd duties ) .

It would be easier if the new RS was a dog or just fwd then it would be a hands down win for the V8 . I did pop up to Inverness before going offshore a few weeks ago to see the new mustang and it's certainly a looker, and they invited me back up last week to test drive the V8 mustang which I haven't yet managed but defo will.

The S4 was and is a beautiful car but as with every Audi you get next to nothing std and can easily go nuts on options ( we wasted 6k on options on the SQ5 but that's a different story [emoji15]) it goes very well and with the optional sports diff it can be provoked into a bit of a powered 4wheel drift .
But the salesman knows my conundrum and will be waiting for the RS press drives with baited breath !! Before the order goes in .

So tweaked out what was it about the drive that hit the decision home ?

Hi there

More depends what you will use the car for really.

Out of the box the Focus RS will run rings around the Mustang unless your a very good driver as the Mustang needs a skillful driver behind the wheel to get the most from it whereas the RS makes its performance and ability easily accessible, even if your a poor driver.

If you want a traffic light grand prix car and want to go on mental b-road fun drives irrelevent of the weather, the Focus RS is the car for you, its quicker to 60mph and it has far more grip making it the better b-road car due to AWD traction. Problem is it is so good out the box improvements do not come easily in handling without big expense though power uprades via mapping and exhaust won't be too expensive, they should hit 400 horses with ease. But that is where it ends, it looks a bit well like a Focus, it makes a pretty pathetic noise compared to a V8 and though the RS has a big heritage the idea of a Focus RS does not excite me at all. Interior wise is nothing special.

Move onto the V8 Mustang, once moving it will be as quick if not faster, 0-100mph in 10.5s compared to around 12s for the Focus. Though it will have less grip and be harder to pedal in damp/wet conditions and it can still cover ground pretty quick, it is just not so easy to do it without crashing or being intimidated, haha.

Mustang for looks, its an icon, for sound, nothing compares to that V8 and the simple fact its a driving delight, front engine, rear driven wheels, great interior, plenty of toys. On a race track or dry road drivers being equal the Mustang should be leaving the RS behind quite easily, again as long as your a good driver.

Other good thing about the Mustang is there is bags more performance to extract from it, Ford did a perfect job on the Focus RS, but on the Mustang they just did a good job and left plenty on the table, think of it like this the Focus RS is Ford's best Focus, it gets no better. The Mustang GT PP is the middle of the road Mustang, you then have the 350, 350R and Shelby GT 500/550 models to come. The great news is you can turn any Mustang GT into a corner carving monster like a 350 or a straightline monster like a 500 with simple bolt-on's or a combination of the both.

So if you want a V8, you enjoy a true drivers car that has all the toys and also enjoy modifying your car the Mustang is the car for you.

If you want an insanely capable car out the box to drive like a nutter on UK b-roads and leave other cars at traffic lights then the Focus RS is the car for you.

I've gone Mustang, I already have FRPP suspension, linear springs, Corsa exhaust and a whole host of other parts to make it how I want it.

I actually expected the Mustang to be more 'crude' than it was. I was pretty surprised by how much more refined it was than the 2013 Boss I had driven a few years back. Niggles aside, it was much more composed in turns with the new IRS. I'm in the US and the competition was a Camaro (I didn't have visibility out of), or a Charger (that was too heavy and interior too plastic).

I also did a mental calculation on what mods I could bump it up with for 10k. When I contrasted that to the Audi (I was thinking of APR pulley and suspension mods) I still don't think the Audi had the same value.

The fact that I could eventually supercharge it in the future put me over the hump as I'd hit a ceiling in the Audi without getting into a big build and headwork. I have 2 kids under 3 yo too, and as long as the wife was on board with it - I was in.

Point well made gibbo and I must admit that with the awesome roads around Aberdeen and the highlands I do love a B road blast but not one for traffic light drags , but on the other hand I do love the days where we just cruise along the road especially back down to the central belt to visit the inlaws .

I have been looking at all the bolt on parts for the GT and its staggering especially the bolt on charger kit [emoji48].

Yeah the noise side of things is easy hands down V8 as the engineered pops and bangs on the RS just don't float my boat ( my old R32 GTR used to throw out real pops and bangs and flames !!) .

Think like this in the Mustang you can drive it at 20mph, it will sound incredible and turn heads everywhere.

The RS won't make any kind of noise at all at 20mph and will look just like a flashy Focus and the only people looking will be the petrol heads.

Also I reckon the Mustang with FRPP suspension or coilovers with linear springs, uprated anti-roll bars with decent MPSS rubber will be just as good as the RS on a b-road but a whole lot more fun due to its RWD layout.

For £4000 delivered I've got full exhaust, full suspension overhaul, interior and exterior styling mods, pretty much got the noise, handling and the stance sorted, beauty of Mustang, modification is cheap and parts are easy to fit.

In a year I will add some nice wheels with decent tyres and a blower for circa 700BHP.

That GTR is a head turner. They still fetch good prices for ones that were DOT'd over in the states.

Tell me about it , didn't shout out about its performance with tacky crap flung at it but when push came to shove it certainly knew exactly how to move . But as it was built in Japan I was always waiting on the inevitable mental bill if the bottom end went or if it lunched the turbos but it had a nice spec

Unknown engine capacity ( RR guru picked up that it had a torque curve of a 2.7 or 2.8 RB)
Hks cams and pulleys
Full trust airnix trust racing suction kit
Z33 nismo airflow meters
Garret 2530 turbos
Trust elbows
Hks front pipes and full system
Massive hks intercooler and oil cooler
Boost approx 1.2-1.3 bar ( conservative boost and map for driveability)
Triple plate clutch that used to rattle like a bar steward

Oh and 3 foot flames on lift off after really giving it some
