I have the Airaid filter system on my EB and it has the conical air filter inside of the closed box.
I'm familiar with these filtering systems, as I've had them previously and have a K&N on my 94 Cobra. The type of filter is supposed to filter out pretty well, but as some of you know, to maintain these filters with the pleats can be a PIA sometimes and time consuming if you have an oiled one where you have to clean it, let it dry and really the spray oil.
Well last year I added an "Outerwears" filter sock, which goes over the conical filter element. I even posted about it a while back and included pics in the "what did you do to your S550" thread.
Note 1:
The upper grille on my EB has not been modified at all where the factory inlet holes are for the filter intake snorkel.
I just looked at it today, which is after it's been on for approx. 5,000 miles. Judge for yourself - the pics represent exactly as found.
As seen, there is quite an abundance of dust, particulate debris and sand particles not only on the exterior of the sock but within the box itself. Granted these type of conical filters are supposed to filter well, but they don't filter "everything" and this debris actually plugs the pleats in a filter w/o such a sock.
I highly recommend this inexpensive "mod" to any S550 members who are using either a closed or open CAI system with a conical air filter. This additional layer of protection is 100% WELL WORTH IT!!
1) It cuts down on debris getting past the filter element material
2) increases filter life
3) water repellent
4) maintains improved performance due to no plugging of pleats
5) best of all it reduces filter maintenance three-fold. All I have to do is open box, vacuum off sock and interior of box - done in approx 10 mins.
Note 2:
Some folks have mentioned in other threads to using nylon stockings to do the same type of mod, however the nylon stocking material does not compare to the micron blocking properties of the Outerwears (or other similar aftermarket) filter sock. Panty hose are not water repellent.
