Hey guys,

Are any of you guys changing the fronts and/or the rear pads for track days? The car is a 2016 GT PP, just wondering if I should be getting a little better pad on the front of the car. Heading to Sonoma 11/20.

Thank You,
Ryan

Dedicated track pads are always a good idea. Even if you just do the fronts (because they are so easy to change). But having a set of 4 just for the track is a good idea.

Unfortunately it's usually an expensive idea LOL that's why I'm still on stock pads. I think I was quoted around $280 fronts + $140 rears.

I am actually very pleasantly surprised with the stock GTPP braking system on track. I have done 3 trackdays so far with them and they have done well. Even got a first place at a time attack event with the stock brakes/pads.

Have fun at Sonoma! I've only been 2x but its an awesome track. :headbang:

Normally I would go with Hawk pads for my turbo Miata stuff but Hawk hasn't released anything for the S550 yet, which is unfortunate. That is why I was kind of asking, I know a dedicated track pad is always ideal but if the stock pads hold up alright I may just stick with them. Who is making a good track pad though? I can't seem to find much for the S550

I ran the stock pads for 10 events. Never had an issue with fade. I ran Texas World Speedway 3x hitting 135+mph on the straight into the first turn. The track has 6 long straights and you hit 100+ and they worked great. I replaced them after 1400 track miles and 11000 total miles with less than 5mm left on the fronts (over 50% wear). I daily drive my car and did not want the squeal of racing compound on the street.

Switched to track pads after getting some fade which I think was pad fade running grippy RE71R tires and driving hard. GLOC R12 front and R10 rear seemed to fix it. Brake fade is no fun and I prefer to take steps to avoid it :)

Never had any signs of fade my first couple of HPDE events on stock PZeros nor at any autocross. Some tracks (and drivers) are harder on brakes than others, so YMMV.

Im sticking with stock pads for street use. The track pads squeal a lot on my car.

I think G loc or Carbotech are pretty much the only choices for GT PP brakes right now until other companies start making them.

If you're using street tires (not "streetable track tires") the stock pads will be fine. If you're using track tires, they still probably will be fine. You will be cleaning brake dust for weeks, but... they're great brakes.

My stock pads were good for a few events. I switched to G-Loc and pull way more G's braking than I did with the stock ones. The squeaking can be kinda bad when just driving around town though and my lap times only went down by 1 second.

First HPDE in the s550.

I will be on G-LOC R16(F) & R10(R) on stock PP brakes running Yokohama AD08R tires.

I'll keep you guys posted.

If you don't have a fresh rotor surface, many pad compounds (carbotech/G-loc for instance) will make noise as the compounds are not compatible. The good news is once you have a clean surface (new or turned) you can switch between their brand pads as they're compatible, so say 1521 or AX6 daily and xp10/12 etc for track with no issues.

Obviously this isn't a cure for noise, but just a way to get the least possible.

As a side note, For the 300tw tires I'm running, I was recommended the R10F/R8R combo as anything else would be too much for the tires.

When and what track? Also where did you buy the pads from? I'm doing buttonwillow next week.

Try the G-LOC pads out. I was able to go from the 4.2 braking marker to the 2.8 marker (10a) at Road Atlanta by switching to G-LOC from Hawk pads.

Check out Porterfield Brakes in Costa Mesa, CA.

http://www.porterfield-brakes.com/

They can custom make most brake pads but it can get a little pricey. Performance Friction PFC01, PFC11 and PFC13 are my favorites. Raybestos ST43 is also a good cheaper alternative.

But they can make and cut most pad shapes and materials, even if the particular brake pad manufacturer doesn't make it for our cars.

I'm running R16/R10 for my first track day and will switch back to stock pads after the track day.
