Hey guys quick question, is it possible to wire in the factory shaker sub into the stereo of a base car? If so is it as simple as hooking it up to the rear deck speakers? If not what would be needed to make it work?

Thank you

If you read enough of the subwoofer threads in this forum, it paints the picture that adding the shaker subwoofer is just not worth it and that there are much better options out there. Most people that have the shaker subwoofer, myself included, have swapped to something else...

If you don't want to give up much trunk space, you can go with the JL Audio Stealth box ($$$$) or a similar product from AudioDesign (see post 5 in the thread below);

If you don't care about trunk space, zenclosures.com makes some reasonably price enclosures that sit behind your rear seat...

This is from another thread I posted to:

I'll try to best explain how I did this. I'm a novice at this stuff and had the Pro shop do most of the install.

You will also need the replace the stock subwoofer amp. Use the ALPINE KTP-190U. About $100. It is nearly identical to the stock amp. It will bolt in place of the stock amp. You will need to remove the subwoofer driver to install the wiring. Since the Alpine amp only has 2 wire for the subwoofer you will need to wire the subwoofer in series (?), I think that's the terminology used. The subwoofer needs 4 wires connecting to it and the Alpine amp only has 2 wires for connection.

The Alpine amp was connected to the rear speakers for the signal and the power wire just simply went to the open subwoofer fuse in the passenger kick-panel. Cross-over the amp at 100Hz

The result is more bass mainly at high volume. This will not blow out the windows or rock the boat. It is intended to give you more bass at higher volume is the best way I can describe it.

I also used the instructions from the JL Audio site for their own subwoofer f or this model car. They are pretty good.

I think total cost was about $500-$600 with the Pro install. I know people with just assume just go with the JL Audio setup (and I agree it's a much better power setup) but when you talk about the outlay in cash this is the most feasible now. The JL Audio setup in $800 for the enclosure and then $300 for the amp and then $200-$400 for install? You are close to $1500 at this point.

So, is there no way to use the factory amp or is it just really weak? I'm going to install a factory shaker sub enclosure in my base GT because I want my trunk space back and I want an OEM setup. I currently have a sub and amp in the trunk with a LOC tapped into the rear speaker wires. Will it be best to ditch the factory amp and just use the sub and enclosure? Or, ditch factory amp and sub and just use the enclosure? I have read through several threads on here about subs and install, but have not found a wiring schematic for the sub and amp themselves, or anyone that has added them to a base model. I'm no audiophile and added my current sub to just get a little more bass. I'm happy with the sound as is, but could really use the trunk space. If I can get the same sound and amount of bass with the shaker sub, I'll be ecstatic.

I have a 401a 12 speaker shaker setup and i think it still lacks a a bit of bass and clarity on high's. For it being the highest priced sound quality option it delivers subpar audio...

I'm planning on replacing the subwoofer on the shaker with one with the same 8" and ohms but with better specs and use the factory amp to see if that improves the bass a bit.

Will also replace the weak tweeters on the pillars and center speaker with something else.

Not expecting audiophile quality here but i'm pretty sure this will improve bass and high's to make it sound decent without modding or wasting much $, will try to spend less than $200 on all these as i'm not changing amp/radio.

I saw a thread where a member did that and he said it improved everything and he added some filling in the enclosure that helped as well, but now I can't find it.

I am curious which tweeters will fit in the pillars. I would like to do that too.

Any 3/4" tweeter will fit in the stock mount behind the factory grill.
You can get a 1" surface mount in if you cut out the stock mount and open up the hole a bit. Easy!

1" kicker, surface mounted

You can use polyfill to stuff the housing. It makes the enclosure seem "bigger"
I used it on my ST and on the Mustang. Makes a slight difference, nothing earth shattering.
You can get a bag at any craft store, it's pillow stuffing.

Cool, thanks!

So, does anyone have a wiring schematic for the shaker sub and amp? All the wiring is in place for my current aftermarket sub, but wondering if I can wire the shaker sub into what I already have.
