Has anyone else expressed this? 2017 Mustang, automatic shifter peeling…a couple years ago it started as a spec now almost the whole thing has come off…does anyone know of a fix? Replacement?

The crackle on the knob appears like it's been refinished before. Or affected by something.

I'd remove and replace.

At one end of the spectrum, you could source a junkyard item. At the other, an aftermarket knob and/or shifter.

As the thread progresses, those with experience can identify aftermarket solutions that worked well.

Edit,

BTW, if you're using a hand sanitizer, conditioner or some type of cleaner, I'd review that. I can understand wear patterns, but crackle, if not previously refinished, makes me think it's something else.

I second that. I've seen that in the VW world quite a bit where the button material would do that and it almost always is external influences. Ie hand sanitizer, cleaner, or other skin care products. In my case it was a citrus cleaner I use from time to time that is pretty strong that rubbed off (even after washing my hands) and destroyed things. I quit using the cleaner after the and found a less destructive alternative.

Looks like the shifter on my 14 Fusion. Your trim ring appears bubbled, too. Mine is. I've always figured it was a little too much COVID era hand sanitizer. 🤷‍♂️

$hitty plate job on the underlying plastic, that's all. The top layer of plating, either nickel or chrome, should stand up to any hand sanitizer/lotion. There must have been a Crack or void to allow whatever in to cause the plating to delaminate. Heat/cold and sun don't help in that process. I'm sure your not the only one who has had this happen.
As my mom would say "Don't pick at it"!
